The Hague, October 26 (Xinhua) -- The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute released a report on the 25th that due to the impact of climate change, the sea level rise rate of the Dutch coast may be much faster than previously predicted, and may even rise by 2 meters by the end of this century.

If greenhouse gas emissions are not reduced, sea levels off the Coast of the Netherlands could rise by 1.2 meters by the end of this century compared to the beginning of this century, and even as much as 2 meters if the melting of the Antarctic ice sheet accelerates, the report said.

By comparison, the agency's 2014 projections show that sea level rise on the Dutch coast will be capped at 1 meter by the end of the century. The forecast was significantly raised, and in the long run, sea-level rise is clearly correlated with greenhouse gas emission reductions; if emission reductions are not effective, the increase in sea level off the Coast of the Netherlands could be even greater by 2300, the report said.

The report also predicts that extreme weather events in the Netherlands will become more frequent in the summer due to climate change, and extreme summer rainfall will become more extreme, while the frequency of summer droughts will increase.
