On August 15, 1949, the Nanyuan Flying Team, the first air combat force of the People's Liberation Army, was established at Beiping Nanyuan Airport, at that time there were more than 30 combat aircraft and more than 50 flight personnel, and it was this unit that participated in the founding ceremony of the People's Republic of China on October 1.

There was no way, at that time, there was a shortage of pilots in the People's Liberation Army, but there was a shortage of air force command talents, because Liu Yalou had contact and understanding of aviation during his study at the Frunze Military Academy in the Soviet Union, and also served as the principal of the old northeast aviation school, so he became a candidate for the commander of the air force.

In August 1949, Liu Yalou went to Moscow to negotiate with the Soviet side to assist in the formation of the People's Air Force. When flying through Siberia from the Soviet Far Eastern city of Chita, the plane was so bumpy that Liu Yalou, who had always been airsick, vomited on the plane.
In fact, not only Liu Yalou was airsick, but xiao Jinguang, the first commander of the People's Navy, was also seasick, and Chairman Mao's use of people was not a fantasy, but had another profound meaning:

This day is also designated as the founding anniversary of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force.

I. The cradle of the New Chinese Air Force: the eagle in the sky
At the end of 1949, the first batch of Soviet-aided aircraft and aviation equipment began to arrive in Manchuria, and by December 31, 1949, New China had received 185 military aircraft of various types, and by the end of 1950, the Soviet Side had delivered another 590.
Among the combat aircraft delivered by the Soviet Union, there were high-end goods such as the MiG-15, old sleeves such as the La-11 and Tu-2, and the MiG-9, which performed crotch-pulling jets, but in any case, it was much better than the American aircraft left by the Japanese, which had zeros and scarce spare parts.

With the advent of aircraft, of course, there must be pilots; the People's Air Force has no ready-made pilots; in addition to the Kuomintang insurrectionists, the vast majority of the pilots initially trained were selected from the Army, and many "new recruits" in the Air Force have actually experienced hundreds of battles, even commanders at the division and regimental levels.
At that time, the Air Force had one criterion for selecting pilots, that is, it was necessary to select outstanding cadres at or above the platoon level in the Army, and very few were selected from school students. Although the veterans are not highly educated, they study hard, have a strong will, and are brave in battle.
In December 1949, the first aviation schools aided by the Soviet Union were also successfully opened at the same time. It has to be said that at that time, the Soviet Union's assistance to the new Chinese Air Force was very positive, taking the Third Aviation School as an example, from the principal, political commissar, engineer, flight instructor and aircraft maintenance personnel, the entire team were Soviet soldiers, and even typists were all equipped.
The Chinese trainees studied very hard, and their progress was so fast that the Soviet instructors were stunned, the trainees studied for 12-13 hours a day, there was no rest day, and it was common to study until 1-2 o'clock in the morning, and some students were even tired.
By March 1950, the aviation school had trained as many as 837 pilots, 620 air crews, 2,500 mechanics, 56 instructors and 650 teaching assistants, in addition to another 140 instructors in two months.

The biggest feature of the Japanese instructors' teaching is that they are meticulous, conscientious and responsible, and can endure hardships like the soldiers of the People's Liberation Army, in order to let the students who do not know a few characters understand the principles of aircraft and flight as soon as possible, they have come up with many local methods, and insist on teaching by example.
Once the Japanese instructor Kikuzo Mizen suddenly walked outside the classroom halfway through his lecture, and the students thought that he was going to find something to explain to them on the spot, so they followed, and as a result, Mimae was actually going to the toilet, turned around and saw that the students had all run to the toilet, and couldn't help but laugh.
These Japanese instructors single-handedly brought out one of the most powerful groups of pilots in New China at that time. Among them are Wang Hai, Zhang Jihui, Liu Yudi and other future air combat kings.
At that time, the Japanese instructor was most optimistic about Wang Hai, including the Japanese captain Hayashi Yaichiro, many Japanese instructors were very recognized by Wang Hai's skills and courage, Hayashi Yaichiro once said to Wang Hai with a strange Chinese: Wang Sang, your great bravery, the future will be greatly outstanding!

Second, the first air force division of new China: not the 1st Air Division
Seeing that the aviation schools everywhere were doing a vigorous and fierce job, and the Soviet-aided planes arrived at the airport in an endless stream, Liu Yalou was full of ambitions. In August 1950, he presided over the formulation of the Four-Year Air Force Construction Outline 1951-1954, declaring:
Within four years, 25,400 cadets have graduated, 97 regiments of aviation units have been formed, 4,507 aircraft have been equipped, 11 aircraft repair plants and 107 airports have been established, and the total strength of the air force has reached 290,000 people.

However, on September 25, 1950, the "United Nations Army" led by the US military landed at Inchon, and the Korean war situation deteriorated sharply, and in October 1950, the new China decided to resist the United States and aid Korea, and the energy of the Air Force began to shift to the Korean war.
Liu Yalou quickly made Liu Zhen the commander of the air force of the Northeast Military Region, and quickly dispatched personnel to form an air force unit that could actually carry out combat tasks. In November 1950, the first divisional combat unit of the People's Air Force, the 4th Air Division, was established.
By March 1951, air command had formed the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 12th, 14th, 15th, 17th, and 18th divisions of the Air Force, the only division in such a long battle sequence that did not have an empty 1 division.
According to world military practice, the first unit should be called the Air 1st Division, but Liu Yalou originally determined that this number had two meanings, the first was to let the Air Force inherit the fine tradition of the Red Fourth Army, the first unit in Jinggangshan.

On January 21 and January 29, 1951, Li Han led his comrades in arms to engage the US plane twice over Anzhou and Dingzhou, shooting down one of the US F-84 "Raiden" fighters, the first record to be recorded.

On September 25, 1951, a large number of American bombers, protected by F-86 fighters, began bombing the Kimcheon-ri Bridge near Pyongyang, and 16 MiG-15 fighters of the 12th Regiment of the 4th Psaycheon Division took off to fight alongside Soviet aircraft.

The Soviet comrades who heard the news looked at the bullet-riddled plane and stammered, raised their thumbs at Li Yongtai and said: Hera laughed, this is not an airplane, this is an aerial tank!
Li Yongtai, who was a great fortune, later shot down and injured four US fighters in a row, and many years later became the deputy commander of the People's Liberation Army Air Force, and was awarded the rank of lieutenant general in the Air Force in 1988.
