Dutch legend Van Basten claims United midfielder has proven he is "not so good".

Dutch legend Marko van Basten claims his compatriot Downey van der Beek has proven himself "not so good" during his time at Manchester United.

Vanderbeek was limited to red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's four Premier League starts last season, who used him more in domestic cups and European competitions.

The Dutchman was linked to a move away from Old Trafford this summer, but Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blocked the possibility of a move to Everton.

Van der Beek will again get the chance to impress at Manchester United this season, but Van Basten doubts he can make a lasting impression because he is "not so good".

Van Basten told Voetbal Zone: "It's not a wise choice. If you say you talked to Real Madrid and then you went to Manchester United, your stakes are too high. Van der Beek is not so good.

"It's much easier to be tenth in Ajax than it is to be tenth in Spain or England. In the Netherlands, you will get a lot of help, you will get opportunities, but this is not the case abroad. ”

After acknowledging that it was a "painful" debut season for Van de Beek, his agent Guido Albers claimed the 24-year-old was "delighted" that the club had shown "trust" in him.

Albers told talkSPORT: "Downey is delighted that the club has such a trust in him.

"But last season was really painful because he didn't play much. He's ready for that. It's about the choice and timing that you have to accept. He signed a six-year contract, but he wanted to play.

"Over the last few weeks he has shown that he is ready for the new season and he has shown what the club likes to see. So we will see in the coming months whether the club will use him.

"Hopefully they'll use him, otherwise we'll have to find other solutions." But I don't think it's necessary.

"It will become clearer that Downey will be a really good Manchester United player in the coming months and please the fans who have always supported him. He will succeed. ”
