Boxwood is a very ideal bonsai material, highly sought after by the industry. Boxwood varieties are mainly divided into two categories from the leaf shape: melon seed boxwood and bird tongue boxwood. Melon seed boxwood has a sporadic distribution in the north and south of the river, but it is not easy to find suitable bonsai materials; the bird's tongue boxwood is represented by the water's edge, mainly distributed in Qian, Xiang, Fujian, Gui and other provinces and regions, suitable for bonsai materials, but due to the looting since the 1990s, resulting in almost exhaustion of wild resources, coupled with extensive cultivation, resulting in a large number of resources being wasted.
In recent years, a large number of melon seed boxwood ancient piles on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau have been discovered, but due to the lack of scientific and standardized transplanting management, the survival rate of piles flowing to other places is very low, the waste of resources is amazing, and it is painful, and the industry circulates the saying that "one year young, two years yellow, three years to see the king". The author has been cultivating alpine boxwood for several years, summing up some experiences and lessons, and is willing to exchange and discuss with pot friends who love alpine boxwood.

In the winter of 2012, the author accidentally learned that there are a large number of yellow poplar ancient pile resources in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, and he had the impulse to introduce species. In the spring of the following year, I tried to buy more than a dozen downhill piles online, when I bought back, most of the soil balls were loose, the author did not take any measures, directly mixed with river sand to plant yellow soil, placed around a number of small buckets, to create a humid and cool environment, spray water on sunny days. In about twenty days, young shoots sprout, and the pimples in the pile are full of buds, which is a feature that other boxwoods do not have. Judged by experience, it is a normal survival phenomenon. Then, before the Qingming Dynasty, a shaded shed was built to protect the sun, and the water spray was gradually reduced, and the pile still grew steadily. 【Pay attention to love wood bonsai, play bonsai with love wood】
In the summer of that year and the following spring and summer, I bought more than ten piles one after another, and used cinder mixed with raw loess to cultivate under the shade of the shed, and used plastic wrap to wrap the pile body to moisturize, without using a bucket. The result is a week of buds. In one growing season, most of them grow well, only a few dehydrated and de-greening (leafless) do not germinate or germinate in place, and have tried to stimulate budding with gibberellin in the middle, but the effect is not good. Nevertheless, the survival rate is also above 90%. So I was overjoyed, that is, in the spring of the following year, I cut off the roots and dried the shape of the basin, and as a result, several piles were destroyed, and the final survival rate was only 80%.
In the years that followed, several piles were purchased each year and planted with root control devices, and the rest of the measures were the same as before. Except for a dehydrated death in the summer of 2016, the rest were alive. Therefore, the author summarizes the premise of the survival of the plateau boxwood: no dehydration, no serious disease, as far as possible with soil and green. In the maintenance, attention should be paid to creating an environment close to the place of origin, shade and sun protection, moisturizing without water accumulation, full sunshine before the Qingming And autumn equinox, and the following year can enter the full sunshine management (baby anti-freezing in the northern region), so that it can be cut and shaped after adapting to the environment, so that the survival rate can reach more than 90%.

Alpine melon seed boxwood is mostly small and medium-sized leaves, and its leaf properties are better, but most of the Yunnan poplar and a small part of the varieties of Qianyang turn yellow and reddish in autumn and winter, which is both a feature and a defect. Yunnan Honghe area of the large leaf boxwood long speed is slightly faster, thousands of years to form a strange large canggu pile, unfortunately the branches are long and sparse, the leaves are large and semi-leathery, slightly wrinkled, to autumn and winter leaf edge yellowing, is its short board, the above varieties need to improve the ornamental effect through grafting.
In the spring of 2016, I tried to change the head for two large-leaf poplar grafts, and the scion chose Hunan watercress melon seed boxwood. The grafting method uses two kinds of split and abdominal joints, and the scion is green. After grafting, the bag is shaded, and about a month shows signs of survival, indicating that the affinity is good: after two months of survival, it has been known: there is a weak necrosis of a rootstock, and the growth of survival is good. In the spring of 2017, scion was made of aspen from the Wujiang area of Guizhou, and two piles were grafted, in the same way as above. After grafting, it took two months to show signs of survival, and the same weak rootstock was necrotic, and the growth of survival was good.
It can be seen that the local douban boxwood is better than the Guizhou bird's tongue boxwood, and the affinity is better, but both are easy to survive, and when grafting, the rootstock branches and secrets must be strong. Yunnan large-leaf melon seed boxwood has significantly improved its ornamental value by grafting and changing its head, which is undoubtedly an effective way to improve this variety.
