Before "The Silent Truth", many people knew me because of "Undocumented Crime", but when the director of "Undocumented Crime" came to me, I actually felt a chill in my heart.
It was the first web series I ever made. At that time, my imagination of the web drama was a group of young people taking a mobile phone to get a DV, breaking dance, skateboarding or something, I thought to myself, Mom, I am so old and old arms and legs, and then shoot a web drama, how desolate.
As a result, when I read the script, I was shocked, it was amazing. The script is particularly fascinatingly written —a person dies, and you just have to think that this person must have done it, click, this person died; and then you feel that it must be that person who did it, click, that person was caught. The rhythm is tight, the characters are very three-dimensional, and as a reader I am attracted.
There were several roles to choose from, and I chose Lee Toyota. He gave me the feeling of being an animal, mysterious, with a lot of room to play.
In fact, the process of character creation is also a process of discovering the truth of silence, first experiencing it emotionally, then rationally analyzing it, stripping away the cocoon, like playing a jigsaw puzzle, grouping all the fragments about him together to form a complete person presented to the audience.
Before filming began, I built the character of Li Toyota in my mind - his mother was a Galaha fortune teller made of human ashes, and the play said that the man was counted with cow bones, the woman was counted with sheep bone, and only for the dead person to use this, and the person who counted the dead was cut off from his children and grandchildren. I don't smoke, I bought a box of research before filming, the cigarettes were crumpled, and suddenly found a possibility, that is, to pull out the cotton wool in the filter mouth, hold it in my mouth, light the paper left in the filter, the flame hula burned my beard, especially smelly that smell, but for a moment I felt that this effect was very good, and in the dark it also seemed that Li Toyota was very vicious. Throughout the play, what left a shadow on many viewers was the scene where I appeared, and the script was written about someone hiding behind the couch watching me beat someone. In the early 1990s, I graduated from university and was assigned to the Shanghai People's Art Theatre (now the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center). At that time, there were fewer original plays in the theater, and the form was relatively simple. At that time, I felt that I basically knew what I would do next, as if I had touched the ceiling of the industry, and because I was not more than anything, the pleasure of being praised had been satisfied many times, and I felt that I was quite good at everything, I could be so successful anywhere, plus it was more popular to go abroad at that time, and it just so happened that my family had relatives in the United States, so I went to the United States in 1996.
After going abroad, I know what the gap is. In China, after graduating from college, there are jobs, there are plays, and the roles are good; although you don't have your own house, the unit provides you with a house, how good. At that time, I imagined that after I arrived in the United States, the quality of life and social status could be higher than this, and I found that you were nothing, but also tired of real life, and the language could not be understood, and became a person who was inferior to a child.
When I first arrived in the United States, I delivered newspapers because of the language barrier, and I also worked as a real estate agent to practice speaking. Because of the lack of money, I had a long, long time to eat that kind of canned food, the cheapest, and after opening it, I got some water and it was soup. No money to buy new clothes, always buy second-hand wear, there are many second-hand stores in the United States, everyone usually does not wear clothes donated to the past, washed clean and sold, where the clothes are cheaper, a pair of jeans is about five pieces, sweaters Ah coat ah up to more than ten pieces.
I also studied jewelry appraisal, really lying on the equipment to study, but probably because there is no way to express, I think it is not suitable for my personality, less than a month to give up; also participated in the court's early immigration translation training, but then because of the lack of lawsuits, a single has not been received; even studied for a period of time finance, not professional financial knowledge, or technical introductory training, and soon felt disliked.
The closest thing I came to making a life choice was working at a post office. At that time, it was about to be Christmas, the regular employees of the post office were on vacation, they needed to recruit a group of temporary workers, the money was not bad, more than $10 an hour, at that time McDonald's was $5 to $7 an hour, because I needed money, I went.
There were boxes in the post office with zip codes on them, and all I had to do was put them in the boxes according to the zip codes on the letter and pack them separately. The packaged machine is old and broken, and when it breaks, I have to find a maintenance worker to repair it, and then I watched him repair it a few times, and I learned that the machine was broken again and I began to repair it myself.
After the holiday, the supervisor came to me and said that there were several temporary workers who were transferred to regular jobs, do you want to stay? The temptation was too great, and I was particularly troubled. After thinking about it for two days, I suddenly asked myself, why did I come to the United States? If I don't come out of the Shanghai People's Art Theater, I can also know what my future looks like, and when I come out to the U.S. Post Office, I can still see the life of my 50s. Finally, I gritted my teeth and wondered if I could compete with myself, and then I said to the supervisor, forget it.
During that time, I was always looking for what I liked, and when I looked for it, I found that what I had given up was the most suitable and attractive thing for me.
Around 2000, I went to the University of Minnesota to study filmmaking, and the reason why I chose to go behind the scenes was because a Chinese person in the United States had limited opportunities to perform if he didn't know how to fight martial arts.
During my school days, I spent my free time working and studying, working in the library and working in the equipment room. At that time, the second landlord of my rent got married and moved away, and I also applied to be a second landlord, helping the landlord to take care of the house, post rental advertisements, collect rent, shovel snow in winter, and cut grass in summer, so that you can live there for free and save rent.

Looking back now, some of the very sad and unpleasant experiences are blurred, and what I really remember are those simple, pure, and poetic moments.
For example, at 6 o'clock in the morning I went from where I lived to the school editing room, the hike was about 20 minutes, the Winter in Minnesota was very cold, and I heard the sound of my feet squeaking on the snow along the way, and there was a very pretentious feeling at that time, I thought Oh, I was working hard for my dream.

The biggest influence of Western art education on me is that there is no standard answer, and teachers encourage the development of students' imagination and creativity. Unless you have a technical problem when you write a script or shoot, the teacher will make suggestions, and as for who is shooting how, who is more artistic, who is more lifelike, they do not comment much, which gives us a lot of freedom.
The final assignment for the second year of graduate school is to make a short film. I shot a 20-minute silent film about an American veteran coming home. Film is expensive, a roll of film 100 feet, normally only 3 minutes to shoot, black and white is 100 US dollars, color is 400 US dollars. Because I didn't have any money, I made a black and white film, and later this film also won a short film award for college students, and I felt that sometimes, limited conditions may give you some more advantages.
I remember after the short film won the award, I and my buddies drank and stared, and then shouted and shouted in the snow, especially happy, fortunately, there are more crazy people in the United States, and no one paid attention to us, but this was really a great encouragement to me at that time.

The real challenge is after graduation. I'd love to stay in the film industry, but I really don't have a chance.
At that time, the closest thing I could do to a movie was to put it on. People bring you the film, you go to the projector and play the movie, and you play the same movie every day. That was a relatively fixed job at that time, others were precarious, sometimes to help others shoot a feature film, you can get a little paid; sometimes to do odd jobs, occasionally have friends to shoot MTV, I will temporarily go to be a recording, or manage a props. More often than not, I had to write my own scripts and direct small films.
Going to school is certainly a way to get close to what you want to do, but it doesn't mean you can make a living from it after graduation, and there is no way to make a living from it. I have a friend who is a foreigner, a Chinese of undergraduate science, a graduate student of French literature, and later graduated to do sales in an ice cream parlor. Many of my classmates who went abroad at the same time as me also changed careers, some of them went into business, some became yoga teachers, and some became full-time mothers.
Around 2007, because my wife had some work at UNICEF in China, my family went back home. I occasionally went abroad to perform some dramas, and other times I began to shoot in China, including "Chinese Peacekeeping Police", "The Legend of Bruce Lee" and "Foxtrot Spy", etc., all of which were filmed in those years.
Compared with before going abroad, the opportunities are indeed much less, not only are there fewer plays found, but the drama is not as heavy as before. People know that you graduated from the theater, know that you were also an actor, but after all, too many years have passed, I left when I was in my 20s, basically still a teenager, after coming back, I would like to be more than half a hundred years old, the image has also changed a lot, and the previous things can not be used as a reference.
There are no channels, no opportunities, and many times you really have to take the initiative to fight. Sometimes when friends go to audition, I go along, take my resume, and get eliminated. Many times, many times, the other party said: Teacher, you are very good, but we may not be suitable here.
I will really be anxious, I will want to be seen, I hope to have a little more opportunity. When there is something to do, it is fine, there is nothing to do will be particularly anxious, there is no way to solve it, that is, to lose temper, to make evil fire, to catch who to send with whom. Go to save a car, people's parking fee is 10 yuan, I have to say, then the front is 5 yuan, why do you 10 yuan? Then lose your temper with people. My wife said: Look at you, people have a clear price written on it, and you are still competing. Sometimes there are evil fires at home, evil fires at every turn, and choking people with a few words when there is nothing to do. It's really boring to think about it now, but in the state at that time, it would get out of control.
At that stage, in the case of no choice, unless the heart specifically rejects the role, the rest is basically to give you what to do well, even if the role itself has some deficiencies, I also try to enrich it and play a satisfactory role.
It wasn't until I acted in "Undocumented Crimes" that I didn't have to worry about not having a scene. During that time, there were more than 30 scripts that came to me to play the role of a killer, some drove to hit people, and after the crash, they were directly stuffed into the trunk and pulled away; and some were sinister underworld bosses, more than 30 roles, which were actually an image, basically facial, making me feel that there was no impulse, and in the end, I did not pick up.
After the broadcast of "Undocumented Crime", a friend of mine began to chase the original after the drama, and after chasing the original work, he began to chase zijin Chen's other novels, and then he mentioned to me the lawyer in "The Long Night Is Difficult to See", that is, Zhang Chao, who I played in "The Silent Truth".

At the beginning of 2019, the director gave me a script, and when I started reading it, I found that this is not the same as the last time my friend told me? Some time ago, a reporter interviewed me to describe Li Jing and Jiang Yang respectively, and I replied: like a peacock and a unicorn. Li Jing is my wife in the play, so it is not an exaggeration to describe her with all the beautiful things; and Jiang Yang can immediately make people think of a white, spiritual and fragile unicorn, who can sacrifice his life in pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty.
If I describe Zhang Chao, who I play in the same way, I feel like a person. I thought about foxes, rabbits, all of which are not appropriate, people are also animals, but it is the most complex and the most real.
In a moment of deciding life and death, the hero can put his own survival possibility aside and fill the whole world with light, but the hero is a minority, and most people in life are the same as Zhang Chao in the early stage. At the beginning, he chose to be silent and wise to protect himself, and he had all the entanglements, worries, and cowardices in ordinary people.
Sometimes I wonder, if I were Zhang Chao, would I be silent or stand up? Maybe until the end I didn't dare to make the same decision as him, fame, family, worldly price is too great. But in the end, for the dignity of life, Zhang Chao chose to sacrifice all this.

And my family, I was really lucky to meet my wife, who has very low material requirements and will always encourage me to do what I want to do.
