Kant discussed beauty as a symbol of morality
When: Friday, June 4 at 15:30
Venue: Tencent Conference (ID: 795555703)
Speaker: Zhou HuangZhengmi (Associate Professor, School of Philosophy, Beijing Normal University)
If there is a certain tension between the two important tasks of the Critique of Judgment—the demonstration of aesthetic self-discipline and the systematic construction of connecting theoretical and practical philosophy—then the proposition of "beauty as a symbol of virtue" is precisely above the node of this tension. On the one hand, the symbolism of beauty must be premised on aesthetic self-discipline; on the other hand, through symbolism, beauty becomes one of the important ways of transition from nature to freedom. This lecture will first clarify the basic meaning of the word "symbol" in Kant's philosophy (perceptual display of ideas) and the way it works (analogy to the rules of reflection); secondly, to determine the philosophical connotation of "beauty is a symbol of virtue"—aesthetic reflection is similar not only to its purity (negative freedom) without perceptual concerns, but also to the inner structure of the subject in moral intentions in terms of its initiative to judge self-legislation (positive freedom). Finally, the role of this proposition in Kant's philosophical system is explained: through formal symbolic relations, beauty and morality not only promote each other in the sense of empirical anthropology, but also, on a priori level, beauty can look forward to what is known, as a transition from nature to freedom.
Homecoming and Leaving Home – Ulysses's Modern Fable
Time: June 5 (Saturday) 18:30-20:30
Venue: Tencent Conference (ID: 5978069090), Bilibili Renaissance and Modern Philosophy
Speaker: Wu Gongqing (Associate Professor, School of Philosophy, Chinese Min University)
Dante rewrote the life of Ulysses in the twenty-sixth song of Hell, portraying and foreshadowing the image of a modern man. Ulysses' enthusiasm made him not satisfied with the sense of security of returning home, but longed to leave home and learn, explore and experience the unknown world, even if it was sin and danger. Dante, while admiring Ulysses's impulse to leave home, and worried about the radical modernity that he exudes, arranged a tragic fate for him. This rewriting of Dante not only shows the expectations and fears of medieval people for modern consciousness, but also reflects the general anxiety of Western thought on family issues.

Love and Holy Love: The Dual Dimension in the Philosophy of Pico Mirandola
Time: June 6 (Sunday) 18:30-20:30
Speaker: Wu Gongqing (Associate Professor, Chinese Min University)
As a representative philosopher of the Renaissance, Picola's ideas have both the color of classical philosophy and the distinctive characteristics of medieval philosophy. On the theme of love: on the one hand, Pico followed the Platonic tradition and strongly emphasized the stimulation of love on man; on the other hand, he highly affirmed god's grace and advocated the calling and elevation of holy love to man. The two dimensions of love and holy love, in the case of Pico Mirandola, strike a perfect balance and together paint a picture of the era of Christian humanism.

Beijing | as a History of Official Revision as a System, Documentation, and History: A Study Session on the Operation and Evolution of the Medieval Official Revision History System
When: June 5 (Sat) 9:00
Venue: Conference Room 208, Jingyuan Second Courtyard, Peking University, No. 5 Summer Palace Road, Haidian District
Speaker: Nie Qinmeng (Lecturer, School of History, Capital Normal University)
Since the Han and Wei dynasties, historiography has been independent, and the prosperity of the types and number of history books between the Han and Tang dynasties and the development of private historiography have attracted wide attention. However, even privately written history books, if the dynasty is the object of the record, must contain an official element. "The Operation and Evolution of the Medieval Official Revision History System" avoids the perspective of the opposition between official revision and private writing, and notes that the official regular revision system has transformed the general environment for the compilation of dynastic history, and has also changed the genre of chronicle history. The concept of "official revision history system" proposed in the book refers to a set of mechanisms for collecting, sorting, and compiling materials guaranteed by the system and the setting up of relevant officials. During the Han and Wei dynasties, the official revision history system of the central organs gradually institutionalized and habitually institutionalized the relationship between government affairs and documents and history compilation. This book examines this from two perspectives: first, in the cross-section of the history of the chronicle, it explores how the genre template and the historical source are adapted to each other, and discusses the linkage between the biography of the Four Yi States, the biography of Xiaoyi, the biography of the general ministers and related government affairs; the second is to examine the development of the vertical process of processing and compiling historical materials, discuss the revision of history between the Eastern Jin Dynasty and Liu Song, the Sixteen Kingdoms and the Northern Wei, and observe the compilation process of the history book with the participation of chronicles and chronicles. In terms of research methods, this book combines history and philology, not only paying attention to the records of historical events and systems in the revision of history throughout the ages, but also attaching importance to the analysis of the structure, style, historical source, and adaptation process of historical texts, which corroborate each other and are unique. This event will focus on the book "The Operation and Evolution of the Medieval Official Revision History System".

The lecture will focus on the two issues of the age of the crane and the expansion of the book: 1. Starting from the beginning of the Song Dynasty when the fistula crane ming entered the literati's field of vision, reviewing the various opinions of the authors of the relevant era, overturning the habitual cognition of Tao Hongjing as the author, taking a group of mourning crane poems included in the "Songling Collection" as the main clue, confirming that the fistula crane inscription was committed by the late Tang Dynasty Pi Rixiu and his friends, and introducing the research conclusion that "the fistula crane inscription is actually a 'quasi-Pottery Hongjing funeral crane game' performed by Pi Rixiu and others influenced by the 'proposed' in poetry"; 2. Introduce the situation of the fistula crane inscription passed down from generation to generation , questioning the authenticity of the existing "water precursor".
