A journey to the "Belt and Road" light and shadow, Chinese films launched the "New Silk Road"

Film enjoys the reputation of "ambassador in a film box", as an important medium of culture, it can vividly show the social style and humanistic heritage of various countries. With the rapid rise of emerging film industries in China and other countries, world cinema has shown a state of conflict, integration and coexistence between globalization and localization. From the perspective of the world film pattern, films with oriental colors and emerging powers are pregnant with new opportunities.

The "New Silk Road" film bridge is an important component part of the "New Silk Road" film and television project formulated by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television in recent years.

Since its inception in 2018, the Belt and Road Film Week has become a highly distinctive and important unit of the Shanghai International Film Festival

The first is to cooperate in filmmaking, which should cover market opening, crowdfunding joint ventures, and mutual use of technology; the theme is best transnational, coupled with an international lineup, joint production, reciprocal marketing, and mutually beneficial revenue, so as to actively promote Sino-Russian, Sino-Iranian, Sino-Thai, Central African, and Central and Eastern European cooperation. Along the "Belt and Road", there are several major plates and cultural consortia such as Southeast Asia, the Arab world, the Slavic world, the Mediterranean and Africa, and careful study of the cultural characteristics of each section can be co-produced to co-produce films that fit the specific cultural context and the aesthetic tastes of the audience. Second, it is necessary to strengthen the touring exhibition of films of countries along the Belt and Road, promote the exchange of visits and academic discussions among filmmakers from countries along the Route, and continue to run the annual Sino-US Film Festival, the "Night of Chinese Cinema" at the Cannes Film Festival, the "Focus on China" at the Venice Film Festival, and the Chinese Film Touring Exhibition in the countries along the Route.

In the film cooperation of the "Belt and Road", cooperation with the BRICS countries is particularly important. At the 2017 BRICS Xiamen Summit, "Where Has time gone" jointly produced by famous directors of the five countries was hailed as a "landmark film", which injected cultural impetus into the "three-wheel drive" of the BRICS mechanism. China is the world's most potential film market, Russian films have a glorious history, Brazil is a South American film power, India has 3 billion moviegoers, and South African films have won international film awards many times. If the five countries can pool their funds, manpower, and technology to make good films with the national characteristics of the five countries, they may be able to firmly seize the film market, which accounts for 40 percent of the world's population.

Shanghai, the "birthplace" of Chinese cinema, is located on the "New Silk Road" node, and has been at the forefront of economic and trade cooperation, infrastructure construction, science and technology education and even cultural exchanges in recent years, and has made many contributions. Now that the "New Silk Road" film bridge has been launched, Shanghai has actively participated in and played the role of "bridgehead."

Shanghai movies have always had a Shanghai style. I remember that in the 1950s, Shanghai hosted the Asian-African Film Festival, and many Asian and African filmmakers, including Nargis (India), France and Africa, were involved in the asian and African film festivals. Big stars such as Hammama (Egypt) came, and Shanghai film fans had the privilege of watching India's "Wanderer" and "Two Acres of Land", Mexico's "Hidden Rapids", Pakistan's "Rebellion" and other good films, whose influence far exceeded that of the Asia-Africa-Latin America Film Festival held in Nantes, France. With the introduction of national films along the "Belt and Road", the attention of Shanghai film fans has also shifted from Hollywood blockbusters to high-quality films in small and medium-sized countries, and the literary and artistic films of various countries screened by the Art Film Alliance are difficult to find. Shanghai filmmakers have also learned from this, abandoning Hollywood routines and commercial practices, and the "Belt and Road" will make achievements for the blossoming of a hundred flowers in the Shanghai film industry.

In promoting film cooperation with countries along the Belt and Road, the Shanghai International Film Festival has done quite well. It has done its best to invite films from countries along the Route to participate in and screen, and this year, under the condition that the epidemic has not completely subsided, 113 countries still registered 4443 films, an increase of 479 over 2019, the most in the past. Seven of the 13 films shortlisted for the main competition are from countries along the route. In order to allow countries along the route to carry out more extensive and in-depth cooperation, in addition to the permanent national film exhibition unit, the Shanghai Film Festival also held country-specific promotion activities, set up a "Belt and Road" theme pavilion in the market exhibition, and invited representatives of film institutions of many countries along the route to jointly sign a memorandum of understanding on the "Belt and Road" film cultural exchange and cooperation mechanism. The 24th Shanghai Film Festival, which opened on June 11, features the Belt and Road Film Week, which features 20 high-quality films with different themes and humanistic characteristics, including "Poet Kuppala", which depicts the legendary life of a Belarusian poet, and 86-year-old Italian national treasure film queen Sopra · Roland's return works, "The Coming of Japan", which depicts the friendship between the surviving prostitutes and orphans in the concentration camps, etc. In order to expand the influence, 6 films were selected to participate in the first Yangtze River Delta screening activities, so that audiences from Hangzhou, Ningbo, Nanjing, Suzhou and Hefei could embark on the "Belt and Road" light and shadow journey together.

In the past two years, the three major film festivals in Cannes, Berlin and Venice have either been suspended or postponed, and the rules have seriously shrunk. The Shanghai Film Festival will follow the trend and upgrade "based on Asia, pay attention to The Chinese language" to "based on Asia and Africa, facing the world", and believe that the "New Silk Road" film bridge shared by countries along the "Belt and Road" led by China will open a new chapter for world cinema and Chinese cinema!
