Synopsis

On a gloomy day, Polonski, a psychiatrist, was notified to go to prison. Bentham, the warden, asked him to make a psychiatric diagnosis for a prisoner who claimed to be God, Voorman, in order to transfer him to a psychiatric hospital, because he had succeeded in convincing all the prisoners that he was God Himself, which caused great confusion to the prison administrators. However, due to the collapse of the prison's computer, the warden could not confirm what crime Ullmann was imprisoned for and how long his imprisonment was. Polonski talks to the mysterious Ullman, who claims to be an almighty God, and he even creates the doctor, and he declares that he wants Belgium to disappear. When the doctor returned home, he looked for Belgium on a map and found that it had turned into a lake. When he returns to prison again, Ullmann declares that he will switch roles with the Doctor. The Doctor became God, and Ullmann became the Doctor, living with his beautiful wife. Before the doctor could object, he found that the exchange had been completed in an instant. The film ends with the roar of a doctor in a prison uniform.

Short film interpretation

It is a short film of Chuang Chou's black humor by Foucagarakon, which aims to discuss three basic propositions: first, the difference between God and madman; second, the difference between a psychiatrist and a sick person; and third, the difference between a free man and a prisoner. The film attempts to imply that all worldly differences can be arbitrarily transformed, and the logic of the transformation is that they are mere illusions created by man for himself. One of the most lame viewing experiences is to confirm that Ullman is really God, and if you think about it that way, you fall into the narrative trap of the author of this film. The slightly cleverer corollary is that all this is an illusion produced by Ullmann's hypnosis on the doctor. But why can't it be a conspiracy between the warden and the doctor's wife?

Based on the ambiguity, ambiguity and openness of the film, it gives us a strong smell of deconstructivism.

There are some intriguing metaphorical details in the film. The long prison wall at the beginning of the film is a symbol of the captivity of the human intellect; the warden's name is Bentham, the British philosopher who proposed the architectural design structure of the panopticon, and now he is synonymous with the prison; another detail is the butterfly specimen in the warden's room, which represents the deformation and unknowability of the form of things; the second time the doctor talks to Ullman, a shot of a rotating exhaust fan appears. That is a harbinger of the imminent transformation of things. When the transition took place, Ullmann, dressed in a doctor's suit, blew the whistling of a Marseillaise, a playful signal that the revolution was taking place. We can still hear the whole prison prisoner singing. If it weren't for the abruptness of this transformation, I would almost think of it as a masterpiece. But its flaws were so obvious that I could only give it a 7.2 despite all the praises it received.

Incidentally, the title The Voorman Problem is not properly translated as "Mr. Ullman the Problem" and should be translated as "Mr. Ullman the Problem", because he is not just a movie suspense problem, but an interesting philosophical puzzle. These philosophical conundrums relate not only to Russell's famous thought experiment , " assuming that the world was created 5 minutes ago " , but also to the contingency of signifiers in the entire symbolic order.
