The story of the gooseberry

Gooseberry is a plant of the gooseberry genus in the family Gooseberry family, also known as "lantern fruit" because of its appearance like a lantern. Gooseberry is widely distributed in Northeast China, Shaanxi, Gansu and Shanxi, and is also widely distributed in the United States and Europe, but the growth fruit of North American gooseberry is slightly smaller than that of European gooseberry, and Europeans have been eating this berry since the Middle Ages. Gooseberries taste similar to grapes, apples or strawberries, depending on the environment and how they are grown. Gooseberry is a perennial plant that can reach up to 1.5 m tall.

Ripe gooseberry, shaped like a lantern

Gooseberry is super easy to grow, and as long as there is plenty of sunlight, it can grow in almost any soil. They can grow into bushes or grow in orientation against walls or fences. Alternatively, you can also grow gooseberries in pots or containers. Today, we will show you how to grow gooseberries in flower pots or containers:

Planting period

Usually gooseberries can grow from cuttings, and American varieties are easier to breed than European varieties. If you intend to use the way they grow out of the cuttings, it is better to plant rootstock cuttings in the autumn with leaves, which can enhance the rooting process.

Before planting, cover the pot with organic fertilizer, such as garden compost or bark chips, put rootless gooseberries between late autumn and early spring, cover some organic matter, about 5 cm deep, choose high-quality 2 or 3-year-old bushes, plant gooseberry bushes, do not put the shrubs too close to each other, that will affect growth, adjacent plants maintain a distance of 1.2 to 1.8m.

growth period

Gooseberries grow in fertile soils with suitable temperatures and good drainage. For potted gooseberries, check the soil frequently, water regularly, and keep it moist every 14 days.

The most suitable temperature for gooseberry flowering is between 15 and 20 °C, and the root growth temperature should not exceed 25 °C.

A currant that receives light

At the end of winter, it is fed with a balanced granular fertilizer of 100 grams per square meter. Gooseberry growth requires nitrogen supplementation, but too much nitrogen can lead to diseases such as mold. In addition to a small amount of nitrogen, gooseberries also need a lot of potassium, and the leaves will wither when potassium is scarce.

If growing too fast, start pruning in the first season winter, keeping three or four branches upward or outward, and cutting off all other side branches. Then, prune these remaining branches back to 15 cm. Perform the same steps next winter, but keep 6 to 12 branches.

Pest control

One of the biggest problems is the gooseberry sawfly, which usually finds pale green caterpillar-like larvae on the underside of the leaf, keeps an eye on them and removes them by hand, they can easily eat the gooseberry plant all night, so it is necessary to be vigilant. Make sure the soil around the plant is free of leaves and debris, and you can also spray pesticides that are good for organic food safety.

Mold can also be a problem, but it can be prevented by keeping the soil always moist and maintaining good air circulation around the plants, and by spraying the plants with fungicides that are good for food safety.

Harvest period

Gooseberries are usually ready to be picked in early July, making sure to protect them with a protective net or the birds will take them away right away. In June, unripe green fruits can be plucked to make jams, pies, tarts and sauces. They ripen by July, and the best way to tell if the currants are ripe is to squeeze them lightly to produce a little juice, so if you want to eat them fresh, pick them in time when they are ripe. Now that you know how to grow gooseberries, it's time to roll up your sleeves and start growing!
