Founded in 1624, Komaruya Sumai, an old Kyoto shop with a history of 400 years, specializes in exquisitely crafted doru fans and folding fans, and in order to keep pace with the times, they have recently introduced modern sports into ukiyo-e art and designed and produced five sports-themed fans set in the Edo period.
1 • Surfing

The most famous ukiyo-e works certainly include Katsushika Hokusai's Kanagawa Rinami, in which Komaruya designed a surf-themed tuan fan against the backdrop.
2 • Skateboarding
Skateboarding was included in the Tokyo Olympic Games, and Komaruya moved the birth of skateboarding to the Edo period, where runners competed on handmade wooden tracks.
3• Lift weights
How about a strong sumo wrestler who participates in weightlifting? The popular Kabuki character Yoshihide Asahina Saburo of the Edo period is portrayed as a weightlifter. Although the barbell pole is made of bamboo, it seems to have a surreal feel.
4 • Large collection of ball sports
In a group fan, there are basketball, handball, badminton, tennis, volleyball, etc., and the players' costume design is very exquisite, and the competition items they participate in are sewn on the uniform.
5 • Rugby
The visual design of this group fan has a lot of white space, the most conspicuous is the red and white cloth bar on the side of the field. The Edo period rugby imagined by Komaruya may be the keju of ancient Japan.
