On July 2, 1979, Mr. Huang Minglong, the founder of China's steroid hormone drug industry and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, passed away.
Huang Minglong was born in 1898 in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, studied at Zhejiang Medical College in 1916, went to Switzerland in 1920 to study, and graduated from the University of Berlin in Germany in 1924 with a doctorate in philosophy. In 1935, he studied at the Institute of Chemistry at the University of Wessburg, Germany, and turned to steroidal chemical synthesis. From 1940 to 1945, he taught at Southwest Union University, and later went to Harvard University in the United States to engage in synthetic chemistry research.
In 1952, Huang Minglong and his wife and daughter broke through many obstacles, detoured through Europe and returned to the motherland to devote themselves to socialist construction.
Huang Minglong has devoted his life to the research of organic chemistry, especially the synthesis of steroid compounds, and has made outstanding contributions to the development of organic chemistry and the establishment of steroidal pharmaceutical industry in China and the cultivation of scientific and technological talents.
Huang Minglong improved the Kaishe Nalf reduction method, known as the "Huang Minglong modified reduction method", which is the only one named after Chinese among thousands of organic chemistry reactions, and has been compiled into the organic chemistry textbooks of various countries.
