Bozhou was developed earlier in history as one of the birthplaces of ancient China, the birthplace of ancient farming civilization.

During the Western Han Dynasty, it belonged to Pei County. In the eighteenth year of the Eastern Han Dynasty, (42 years) he ruled the History Department of Yu Prefecture in Yu County. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, the prefecture became a first-class administrative region, of which the yuzhou assassin history department was located as Yu Commandery (谯郡, in modern Bozhou, Anhui Province). During the Three Kingdoms period, in the second year of the Wei Dynasty (221), Fengchen Commandery was named "Peidu", and together with Xuchang, Chang'an, Luoyang, and Yi, it was called "Five Capitals". It administers Xiang County, Xiao County, Sui County, Fei Ting, Ku County, Song County, Chengfu County, Shansang County, Zhuyi County, Fuli County, Pu County, Huan County, Longkang County, and Hong County. During the Western Jin Dynasty, the state was established here, and later it was also a county, and it was ruled by a county. In the fourth year of the Northern Wei Dynasty (507), it was the seat of the Southern Yan Prefecture. In the third year of the Sui Dynasty (607), BoZhou was changed to Tan Commandery (谯郡).
In the fourth year of Tang Wude (621), Yu Commandery was renamed Bo Prefecture (亳州), which had jurisdiction over 8 counties: Yu County (谯县, in present-day Chencheng District), Shansang County (present-day Mengcheng County), Chengfu County (present-day Chengfu Town, Chengcheng District), Linzhuo County (present-day Linzhuo Town, Suixi, Anhui), Yuxian County (present-day Yongcheng Town, Henan), Luyi County (southwest of present-day Luyi County, Henan), Yongcheng County (present-day Yongcheng County, Henan), and Zhenyuan County (present-day Luyi County). In the fifth year of Wu De (622), he set up a governorate in Bozhou, with jurisdiction over the prefectures of Bo, Song, Ying, Shen, and Tan. In the seventh year of Wude (624), the governor's office of Bozhou was changed to the governor's palace.
During the Song Dynasty, Bozhou belonged to Huainan Road, and Emperor Zhenzong of Song promoted Bozhou to the rank of Jiqing Army.

In the Yuan Dynasty, Bozhou belonged to Bieliang Road and had 6 counties under its jurisdiction. In the fifteenth year of the Yuan Dynasty (1355), Liu Futong rebelled against the Yuan, supported Han Lin'er as emperor in Bozhou, established the "Han song" regime, and made Bozhou the capital for three years.
In the early years of the Ming Dynasty, Bozhou was a county, which belonged to Fengyang Province. In the ninth year of Hongzhi (1496), the county was promoted to a prefecture, and the Yimen Inspection Department was set up within the territory.
At the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, Bozhou was directly under the jurisdiction of the Anhui Provincial Envoy Department. In the second year of Yongzheng, Bozhou had jurisdiction over Yu County, Taihe County, and Mengcheng County (present-day parts of Mengcheng, Woyang, and Lixin), and in 1864, after the Qing court suppressed the Twist army, One county was set up in each part of Zhiyang County, Mengcheng County, and Fuyang County.
In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the National Government demoted BoZhou to Bo County, which was directly administered by the province.
In February of the 37th year of the Republic of China (1948), the 11th Column of the Central Plains Field Army liberated the county seat of Boxian County. In August of the 37th year of the Republic of China (1948), Bozhou City was established. In October 1950, it was renamed Boxian People's Government. In June 1956, it was renamed the Boxian People's Committee.
In 1964, the State Council decided to set aside one from Fuyang, Woyang, Mengcheng, and Fengtai to establish Lixin County.
In March 1986, with the approval of the State Council, Bo County was changed to Bozhou City (county-level), which belongs to Fuyang District of Anhui Province, and the administrative area of the former Bo County was the administrative area of Bozhou City. On June 4 of the same year, the inaugural meeting of Bozhou City was held.
On January 14, 1998, the provincial party committee and the provincial government decided that Bozhou City would be directly under the jurisdiction of the province (sub-prefecture level).
On May 11, 2000, the State Council approved the establishment of the prefecture-level Bozhou City, and the Municipal People's Government was stationed in the newly established Chencheng District. Bozhou City has established the District of Tancheng District, with the administrative area of the former county-level Bozhou City as the administrative area of the District of Tancheng District, and the District People's Government is stationed in Wenhua Lane. Woyang County, Mengcheng County, and Lixin County, which are under the jurisdiction of Fuyang City, are placed under the jurisdiction of the newly established prefecture-level Bozhou City. Bozhou has jurisdiction over Woyang County, Mengcheng County, Lixin County and the newly established Yucheng District.
