Life of Academician Lu Wanzhen

Wanzhen Lu is an analytical chemist and petrochemical.

Born in 1924 in Tanggu, Tianjin. He received his bachelor's degree from the Department of Chemical Engineering from the School of Engineering of Chongqing Central University in 1946, his master's degree in chemistry from Illinois University in 1949, and his Ph.D. from the Department of Chemistry of Ohio University in 1951. From 1952 to 1953, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Chemistry of Northwestern University, and from 1953 to 1955, he was a researcher at the Corn Products Refining Company in the United States.

After returning to China in 1956, he worked in the Institute of Petrochemical Industry, successively serving as the director of the analysis room, the chief engineer, and now a senior consultant. During this period, an analysis and testing center with complete categories and supporting personnel, including spectroscopy, chromatography, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetism, was built, which became an example for various petrochemical research units. Because of her outstanding contributions, Lu Wanzhen was twice named the National March 8th Red Banner Bearer in 1983 and 1990, and was elected as an executive member of the National Women's Congress from 1983 to 1984. In 1991, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Academician Lu Wanzhen has been engaged in analytical work for a long time and has always been able to solve practical problems as the guiding ideology, so the analytical instruments she uses are very extensive, and she can grasp the development, principle and application of various new analytical instruments, which is a rare generalist in the field of analysis. At the same time, she also pays great attention to in-depth research on several analytical techniques that are closely related to petrochemical industry, such as gas chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, near-infrared spectroscopy, etc., so that it can gain a foothold and innovate in China.

She has trained more than 30 graduate students, and most of her topics are petroleum analysis. She hopes that through these research work, they will develop their ability to master knowledge and apply knowledge. In order to make the analytical work targeted, she asked them to be familiar with various related disciplines, such as petrochemicals, refining processes, data statistics, precision instruments, etc. The analysis center she leads provides more than 100,000 data for all parties every year, but rarely receives high-level rewards, which she often deals with with indifference and open-mindedness, and she often advises some anxious young people to say: "Scientific achievements are the accumulation of years, not overnight glory." ”
