Jiangxia Jinkou

As an ancient administrative establishment unit in Wuhan, ShaXian had its history first in the Chu state during the Warring States period, and around 350 BC Chu set sha qi in Tukou (now Jinkou). At present, Jinkou still has the name of Shaxian Street.

After qin destroyed the six kingdoms to unify the world, Qin Shi Huang abolished the sub-feudal system and established a county system, and in 246 BC, King Yingzheng of Qin assigned Sha Xian to Nan County, one of the thirty-six counties.

Bounded by Hanshui and Nanyang Commandery to the north, Wu and Chugu and Jiujiang Commandery to the east, Dongting Lake and Changsha County to the south, Wuguan and Hanzhong County to the northwest, and Wuling Mountains and Qianzhong County to the southwest, nanjun encompassed most of present-day Hubei.

Shaxian was located in the east of Nan County, and had jurisdiction over present-day Hanyang, Hankou, and the counties and cities of Xianning, Jiayu, and Puxi in southern Hubei.

The specific scope of Shaxian County during the Great Qin Empire was the territory of present-day Wuhan City, Wuchang, Hanyang and the south of Hankou, the southern border of Hanchuan City, the northern border of Chongyang County, Jiayu County, Xianning City, and the whole territory of Puxi County.

After the Battle of Chibi in 223 AD, the nine counties of Jingxiang, Jiangxia, Guiyang, and Changsha all belonged to Sun Quan of the State of Wu. The State of Wu divided the southwestern border of ShaXian and placed Puxi County under the jurisdiction of Changsha County.

In 350 BC (the nineteenth year of King Xian of Zhou), Xiong Liangfu ,reigned 369 BC – 340 BC) of Chu Xuan established Shaxian County in Tukou (present-day Jinkou, Jiangxia District, Wuhan).

It was later renamed Rincheon County, and five years later it reverted to its old name. According to the Book of Han, in the sixth year of Han Gaozu (201 BC), Liu Bang carved out the part of the land east of Jinling County from Nan Commandery and set up Jiangxia County, which had jurisdiction over 14 counties, and the county was located in Xiling County (present-day West of Xinzhou District, Wuhan).

At that time, Wuchang was under the jurisdiction of Exian County, and Hanyang belonged to Shiyang County, both of which were under the administration of Jiangxia County.

At the end of the Qing Dynasty, Jiangxia had jurisdiction over present-day Wuhan, present-day Xianning City, Jiayu, Puxi, Chongyang, Tongshan and other places. Historically, it once came under the jurisdiction of Shaxian County, Runan, Wuchang, Yingzhou, and Jiangxia County.

Shaxian County was one of the 14 counties of Jiangxia County, and today's Wuchang and Hongshan Districts and Jiangxia District were all under the jurisdiction of Shaxian County at that time.

Later, Jiangxia underwent many changes in history, and the area slowly became smaller step by step.

In 1912 (the first year of the Republic of China), it began to have the name of Wuchang County (now Jiangxia District), and the county government was located in present-day Wuchang District.

In November 1959, Wuchang County was transferred to Wuhan City.

In the early 1960s, due to the redivide of the administrative area of Wuhan, the Wuchang County government moved to PaperFang Town. Legend has it that the name of the paper mill comes from a papermaking workshop next to the ancient post road.

In April 1961, it was assigned to the Xiaogan Special District.

In November 1975, Wuchang County was again assigned to Wuhan City and became one of the suburban counties of Wuhan City.
