The covenant between King Qin Wu and Gan Mao is an oath, and it is also a trust in the recommendation of previous articles

History is a book, and every time you turn a page, you can always taste what you read and think of the present.

It happened in the seventh year of King Zhao of Zhou (癸 ugly, 308 BC).

King Wu of Qin sent Gan Mao as an envoy to the State of Wei, intending to make an agreement with the King of Wei to jointly attack Yiyang, Korea. The State of Wei obeyed Gan Mao's plan, but Gan Mao asked his assistant to return the favor to Shou to the King of Qin, hoping that the King of Qin would not attack Yiyang.

King Wu of Qin was puzzled, and when he greeted Gan Mao in The Land, he asked him why.

Gan Mao explained: Although Yiyang is a county, its scale and number of people can actually be regarded as a county level. This shows that Yiyang is not a place that can be easily breached. Sending troops to attack Yiyang, which is thousands of miles away, in addition to facing the dangerous terrain, more importantly, it is easy to have a trust problem between the king and the general, thus shaking the hearts of the army.

Why?

Gan Mao gave two examples to King Wu of Qin.

He was involved in murder

A man with the same name and surname as Zeng Zeng in the Lu kingdom killed someone. When a neighbor heard about it, he came to tell Zengsan's mother, who was still weaving cloth after hearing it, calmly. When three people came to tell her the same thing, the kind mother also believed that her son had killed someone, threw down the machine, jumped the wall and fled.

Le Yang attacked zhongshanguo

In that year, Wei Wenhou appointed Le Yang as a general to attack ZhongshanGuo, and it took three years to capture it. When he returned to discuss the reward for meritorious deeds, Wei Wenhou ordered the official in charge of the documents to take out the letters of the Qunchen who had accused Le Yang of the group of ministers, which was as many as a basket. After Le Yang saw it, he repeatedly prostrated his head and said, "This is not my credit, it is really due to the trust of the great king!" ("This is not the work of a minister, but also the power of the king!") ”)

Gan Mao concluded: His own virtuousness is not as good as ZengShan's, the king's trust in himself is not as good as Zeng's mother, and there are far more than three people who are jealous of himself, I am afraid that the king will also throw down the machine at that time. Besides, I was just a foreigner living in the Qin Kingdom, and if Lizi, Gongsun, and others attacked me with Korean matters, the king would definitely listen to them. At that time, the plan to attack Yiyang was abandoned, and the king reneged on his agreement with the king of Wei, and he himself would be resented by the Koreans.

After King Wu of Qin heard this, he and Gan Mao made a vow in The Land, vowing not to let other people's advice interfere with the strategy of attacking Yiyang.

Therefore, Gan Mao led his troops to attack Yiyang, but after five months, it was not conquered. Li Lizi and Gongsun did indeed rush to the King of Qin to accuse Gan Mao. The King of Qin then sent someone to recall Ganmao and wanted to strike the army. Gan Mao only said, "The land is still in that place." King Wu of Qin suddenly realized, remembering the covenant of the land, so he sent more troops to assist Gan Mao, and finally captured Yiyang.

Similarly, the qin state was able to capture Yiyang, which was inseparable from Gan Mao's command on the front line, and also inseparable from the qin king's trust and support for Gan Mao. Compared with the heroic battles of Gan Mao and his soldiers on the front line, it was more important that the King of Qin kept his oath to rest on the soil with Gan Mao. If the King of Qin had listened to the accusations of Li Lizi and Gongsun and others, and chosen to strike the troops and return to China, even if Gan Mao's talent was great and the determination of the generals was strong, Yiyang would never have conquered it.

This reflects an invisible key factor in today's workplace that determines the direction of success or failure – trust.

There are many inspirational articles on the market and on the Internet, telling people in the workplace how to gain the trust of others. But we can see from the stories of Qin Wuwang and Gan Mao that trust is easily affected by external factors, and leaders are often more important to the success or failure of a decision. So, we're talking about trust here from the perspective of a leader or decision maker.

First, the trust of the leader or decision-maker in the appointee.

At the beginning, Wei Wenhou maintained a non-doubtful attitude towards the advice letter accusing Le Yang, even though it took Le Yang three years to complete the mission, but Wei Wenhou did not abandon his trust, which could successfully capture the Zhongshan Kingdom.

Second, the trust of the leader or decision maker in the decisions he or she makes.

When King Qin Wu was able to capture Yiyang, on the one hand, he kept his agreement with Gan Mao and did not choose to retire because of the accusations made by others against Gan Mao; on the other hand, King Qin Wu also insisted on his own decision, because he had decided to attack Yiyang in the first place. If he felt that his decision had failed when he saw that Gan Mao had not conquered Yiyang for five months, whether he had accused Gan Mao or not, he would choose to strike. Therefore, sometimes what needs to be adhered to and trusted should be more important to the decision-makers themselves.

Of course, trust is a two-way street.

Gan Mao's trust in King Qin Wu was reflected in his loyalty, and when Gan Mao dared to make an oath with King Qin Wu, the prerequisite was his loyalty to king Qin. Without this loyalty, the army he leads is fragile and resilient. Don't say five months, maybe one or two months did not break through Yiyang, he himself gave up.

Not only in the workplace, but also in our lives. However, now that fraud is happening frequently, we believe more in the "heart of the people", we must first protect ourselves. Trust, it seems, has become somewhat foolish and extravagant.

Trust is a double-edged sword.

Sometimes we choose to trust, but the other party secretly "stabbed the knife", which makes people chill; but when we are trusted by others, it will be like the sunshine in winter, making us feel warm and hopeful.

Trust, although there are only two words, but the meaning contained in it is not something that can be said in three words.
