Biography
Anatole France (1844–1924) was a French writer, literary critic, and social activist. His real name is Thibault François, born in Paris to a family of booksellers. "France" is an abbreviation of his father's name, François, and because he loves his motherland France, he takes the name of his motherland as his pen name.
When he was a teenager, François often wrote bibliographies and book introductions for his father, and was immersed in the sea of books. In 1873, he published his first collection of poems, The Golden Psalms, which later became famous for writing literary criticism, and in 1881, he published The Sin of Bonaire, which became famous in the literary world. Later he wrote a series of novels about historical themes. Influenced by the French idealist historian Lénan's "Man can never come close to the truth", these works of his exude the pessimism of historical cycle theory and the futility of social transformation, but more are full of ridicule and criticism of social ugliness. In 1881, he published The Crimes of Sylvester Pownal, which became famous in the literary world.
At the end of 1896 he became a member of the Académie française.
In 1894, the French government fabricated the Dreyfus treason case. François supported Zola's publication of an open letter questioning the French president, "I Accuse", to uphold justice and demand that Dreyfus be rehabilitated. In the course of the struggle, France, seeing the darkness of capitalist society and the despicable shamelessness of the reactionary ruling class, gradually accepted socialism from then on. During the Russian Revolution, he was active in social activities, became a member of the French Socialist Party, and won the admiration of left-wing intellectuals and the working class.
He joined the French Communist Party in 1921.
In 1921, In recognition of his brilliant literary achievements, characterized by a noble style, a deep sense of humanity, elegance and a truly Gaulsian temperament, François was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
When France died in 1924, the French government held a grand state funeral for him.
