After the founding of New China, Wang Huo began to conceive of writing "The Era of No Return" (the predecessor of "War and Man"), intending to use more than one million words and three ancient poems as the title of the book, namely" "The Moon Falls and The Sky Is Full of Frost", "The Mountain is in the Void", "Maple Leaf DiHua Autumn Sergeance", and the span of time is written from the Xi'an Incident to the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan and the outbreak of the Civil War. Working in Shanghai from 1950 to 1953, Wang Huo used his spare time to create, slower but more ambitious.

In the spring of 1953, Wang Huo was transferred from the Shanghai Federation of Trade Unions to the All-China Federation of Trade Unions in Beijing, where he served as assistant editor-in-chief and editorial board member of the magazine "Chinese Workers". During the three years of difficult times, he often went hungry to write a book, and finally completed the first draft of 1.2 million words. However, at this time, Wang Huo received a notice that "Chinese Workers" was suspended, and he led a team to support the farmers in the Yimeng Mountains of Shandong Province. Before leaving, Wang Huo handed the manuscript to the China Youth Publishing House. In extraordinary times, this manuscript was said to be "the product of the black line of literature and art", the manuscript was taken to the exhibition, Wang Huo was discouraged, and he burned this manuscript that condensed his efforts for more than ten years at the door.

Finally ushered in the reform and opening up, in 1978, the editor of the People's Literature Publishing House wrote to Wang Huo, asking about the manuscript and encouraging him to rewrite it. Wang Huo has long been familiar with the story of historians talking about migration during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Tan Qian spent more than twenty years to complete the "Guo Yu" was stolen by thieves, and at the age of 55, he rewrote "Guo Yu". Inspired by this, the 55-year-old Wang Huo decided to rewrite "War and Man". When working in Linyi, Shandong, he completed the first part of "The Moon Falls and the Sky Is Full of Frost".

In the autumn of 1983, Ma Jun, a classmate at Fudan University, invited Wang Huo to work at the Sichuan People's Publishing House, and Wang Huo took the first completed manuscript to Chengdu. However, just when Wang Huo just started writing the second part of the creation, there was a big accident. He went all out and used one right eye to complete the second part of "The Mountain in the Void" and the third part of "Maple Leaf Hagi Flower Autumn Seser". Writing with one eye, the difficulties can be imagined. Looking at things inaccurately, pouring boiling water is easy to pour on the hand. It is easy to clip the dish to the outside of the bowl. Writing, reading, easy to get tired, easy to fatigue. When writing, he needs to wear four hundred degrees of reading glasses and then use a magnifying glass. Hold a pen in one hand, a magnifying glass in the other, and press the paper with your hand to write.

After decades of hardship and tempering, this 1.67 million words, soaked in Wang Huo's half-life painstaking masterpiece, was finally completed. In 1993, the work was published by the People's Literature Publishing House and received great response, and was praised as a majestic epic that reflected the eight years of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, and won numerous awards: Guo Moruo Literary Award, People's Literature Award, National Book Award and other important awards were collected one by one, and was selected into the "World Anti-Fascist Literature Book Department" and the "New Chinese Literature Department".
