Recently, the Shaanxi Provincial Forest Variety Approval Committee organized experts to go to Qingfeng Village, Banqiao Town, Hancheng City, to conduct an on-site preliminary examination of the 'Yellow Cover' peppercorn varieties declared by the Hancheng Pepper Research Institute and the Shaanxi Provincial Forestry Technology Promotion Station.

Through on-site inspection, data measurement, listening to reports, access to information and discussion and questioning, the preliminary expert group unanimously agreed that the variety has good yield performance, stable traits and excellent quality. It is suitable for cultivation in Hancheng, Huazhou and similar ecological areas, and it is recommended to submit it to the Shaanxi Provincial Forest Variety Approval Committee for approval.

The good varieties that Hancheng Dahongpao has identified are "Lion's Head", "Thornless Pepper", and "Nanqiang No. 1". In order to more comprehensively grasp the distribution of Germplasm Resources of Dahongpao Peppercorns in Hancheng and breed new varieties, our unit set up a hancheng Dahongpao Peppercorns Native Variety Resources Survey Team, through the formulation of meticulous work plans, scientific investigations, long-term observation records and rigorous data analysis, through telephone inquiries, village visits, field observations, regular measurements and other investigation methods, a comprehensive investigation of the germplasm resources of Dahongpao peppercorns, after screening, and finally the 'Yellow Cover' peppercorns as the key investigation object.
In 2002, when picking peppercorns in their own fields, pepper farmers of Qingfeng Group in Xingxing Village, Banqiao Town, Hancheng City, found that there were several peppercorn trees with large fruit particles, a large number of fruit spikes, strong resistance to stress, and the fresh fruit was yellow-red on the sunny side, bright red on the back yang surface, and bright red in color. Pepper farmers are commonly known as 'yellow cover' peppercorns. Because of its few thorns and easy to pick, large fruit grains, large number of ears, high rate of net pepper, drought tolerance, barrenness tolerance, strong stress resistance, good yield performance, deeply loved by the majority of pepper farmers. The 'Yellow Cover' mother tree has now been 25 years old, and the "Sub Generation" and "Second Generation" have been planted in Hancheng and the surrounding Hua County, Linwei, Sanyuan, Henan Sanmenxia Shichi, Luoyang Mengjin and other places, and are consistent with the characteristics of the 'Huang Gai' peppercorns in the Hancheng Test Site of Origin, and the traits are stable.

'Yellow cover' peppercorn root system is developed, strong adaptability to soil, drought tolerance, hardiness, barrenness, strong stress resistance, easy to plant, suitable for deep and fertile loam soil, sandy loam soil, more like light, avoid wind, can also be planted in the hillside of terraces, terraces, ditch slopes, sides and farmland forest network; it is not suitable for planting in the wind outlet, mountain top and alpine cold and low-lying places.

The 'Yellow Cover' peppercorns sprout and spread their leaves in Mid-to-Late March in Hancheng, bud in early to mid-April, enter the full flowering period in mid-April, expand the fruit from late April to mid-June, and color and mature from late June to mid-to-late August.
