In 1902, Yuan Shikai began to found the Beiyang New Army, and successively established three associations (brigades). In the election of the co-ordinator, he ostensibly adopted the examination method, and seemed to be ren xian and capable. As a result, he was admitted to Wang Shizhen for the first time and Feng Guozhang for the second time, but Duan Qirui did not pass the examination twice in succession. On the eve of the third exam, Duan was very nervous, worried that he would once again fall behind Sun Shan, not only would his face be lost, but he would no longer have any hope of promotion, so he was sullen. The night before the exam, just as Duan Qirui was sitting in a daze, suddenly the summons officer came to him and said that Yuan Shikai had asked him to go. He immediately came to Yuan Shikai's mansion, and Yuan told him to sit down and talked to him about Silas. When Duan retreated, Yuan Shikaisai gave him a note. Duan Qirui was very puzzled, but he did not dare to open it in front of Yuan. When I got home, it turned out to be the test questions for this exam. The next day, when he took the exam, he quickly passed the exam, and he won the first place in high school and became the leader of the Third Association. Duan Qirui deeply felt that Yuan Shikai was as kind as a mountain to him and never forgot it. Unexpectedly, these words were later heard by Feng Guozhang and Wang Shizhen, and they did not feel that they laughed. It turned out that Wang and Feng had also experienced such things when they were taking the exam.

Duan Qirui (6 March 1865 – 2 November 1936), formerly known as Qirui (启瑞), was a native of Hefei County, Luzhou Prefecture, Anhui Province (present-day Hefei, Anhui Province). During the Republic of China, the leader of the Anhui warlords, known as the "Tiger of the Beiyang", was the main target of Sun Yat-sen's "Dharma Protection Movement".
From 1916 to 1920, he was the de facto ruler of the Beiyang government. From 1924 to 1926, he was in power temporarily in power of the Republic of China. On March 18, 1926, the Duan Qirui government suppressed the student movement in Beijing. On November 2, 1936, Duan Qirui died in Shanghai Hongen Medical, known as the "Six No Premiers", who served four premiers, four army chiefs, one chief of staff, and one head of state.
