Monty on Shamet's contract extension: He's the player we want and the right guy in the program

Suns coach Monty Williams was interviewed by reporters after training today, in which he talked about the team's renewal of Shamet.

"I think I've always been pretty sure what kind of players we want, but when you see players get paid, it's cool. It's my job. I've said it before. We want to win games and fight for the benefit of our players. The renewal thing happened so quickly that he was willing to stay here. Monty said.

In the 2018-19 season, Monty Williams served as the 76ers' chief assistant coach; Shamet was selected by the 76ers with a 26 pick in the first round to enter the rookie season.

"I've been with him since the first day he was chosen. It's cool to be in the Suns manager position now and see that he wants to work with us. Monty said.

Monti added: "In terms of what we've seen so far, and what we know about Shamet, we think he's the right guy in our plans, but I think people will only think about the attacking side and ignore his defensive ability. He is able to block in front of his opponent and block the opponent's route. He deals a lot with veterans, so he knows what it's like to go through tough and long days, hit the playoffs. And then you look at it from an offensive point of view, and he seems to be a good choice. We don't know what that will happen, but we think there will be a very good future for him and for us. ”

According to previous reports, the Suns and defender Shamet reached a four-year, $43 million early renewal contract.

In the regular season last season, Shamet averaged 23 minutes per game, with 9.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists, and shot 38.7% from three-point range.
