It is International Gibbon Day
Today

They got their name gibbons
It's because the arms are particularly slender
Most often use their arms to "arm line" in the canopy
You can also "walk upright" like a human being.
In apes
Gibbons have the most developed arms
When they move quickly on the canopy
Almost all "flying"
They differ the most from monkeys in appearance
It lies in the absence of a tail

What is the current status of gibbon population and distribution in China?
There are now 20 species of gibbons worldwide
China accounts for 6 species
It is one of the countries with the richest species of gibbons
They are
Skywalker gibbon, white-palmed gibbon
Northern white-cheeked gibbon, western black-crowned gibbon
Eastern black-crowned gibbon and Hainan gibbon

Another addition of skywalker gibbon
(also known as Gaoligong white-browed gibbon)
There are less than 150 in existence
And isolated in multiple blocky forest areas that are not connected to each other
Becomes the 25 most endangered primate species in the world
Even though our country has so many species of gibbons
The full number of available wilds
The sum is only 1500
Why protect gibbons?
Gibbons are the flagship species in the forest
It is a sign of a healthy forest
They are extremely dependent on the food provided by primary forests
In addition, the whining is easier to detect
Gibbons can serve as an early warning of deteriorating forest conditions
The disappearance of gibbons
This means that the forest is no longer healthy
A forest ecosystem in which gibbons live
It is the area with the richest biodiversity in China
Protecting gibbons is like stretching out an umbrella
Indirectly protected
Other organisms that live in the same area
Xiaobu will introduce it to everyone
Two of these species of gibbons are distributed in Yunnan
Western black-crowned gibbon
The Western Black-crowned Gibbon is a nationally protected animal
There are only about 1,400 species left worldwide
There are about 1300 in China
All are distributed in Yunnan Province
Except for Chuxiong Shuangbai
In Pu'er City East Yi Autonomous County
Mount Ailao and Mount Immeasurable
Two national nature reserves
Also living
There are about 500 western black-crowned gibbons
It is as rare as a giant panda
More than one-third of the world
The Western Black-crowned Gibbon thrives in Pu'er
And Pu'er City East County
As an area with a relatively concentrated population of western black-crowned gibbons
It is of great significance for the conservation of the species as a whole
In 2008
Jingdong County is recognized by the China Wildlife Conservation Association
Awarded the honorary title of "Hometown of China's Black-crowned Gibbon"

The Tianxing gibbon is a nationally protected animal and is listed as a globally endangered species. It is a small group of great apes that live mainly in evergreen broad-leaved forests and are typical arboreal primates, with black-brown males and pale yellowish-brown females, most notably the whiteness of both eyebrows.

"Fathers are called 'back heads,' mothers are called 'Azhen,' and their children are called 'grains of rice.'" Yang Youshan pointed to the Tianxing gibbon that was foraging on the distant treetops. Gibbons are highly vigilant, roaming in the canopy, jumping very fast, and difficult to track and monitor.

Yang Youshan is a ranger at the Baoshan Management and Conservation Bureau of Gaoligong mountain national nature reserve in Yunnan Province, mainly responsible for tracking and monitoring the Tianxing gibbons living in the area. "When we carry out follow-up monitoring, we must record in detail the range of activities, feeding, defecation and other situations of the Celestial Gibbons, and even record what fruits and leaves they eat and how long they eat." Yang Youshan said.

Yang Youshan has been tracking and monitoring this gibbon family for 12 years. Gibbons had become accustomed to the appearance of him and other rangers. "Sometimes we're observing and recording, they eat calmly in the trees, or they roam freely." He said.
Due to long-term tracking and monitoring, Yang Youshan has gained an in-depth understanding of the life habits of Tianxing gibbons. "They sleep on branches at night, and when they wake up in the morning, they move their position slightly and start defecating."
A few years ago, when researchers carried out the study of Tianxing gibbon at the Zhao Kang Pipe And Care Station, Yang Youshan and his colleagues undertook a particularly basic and important task - picking up gibbon feces. "We wore masks and gloves and only picked up the feces pulled by the gibbons before 9 a.m." Yang Youshan said that one day in 2017, a colleague was hit in the head by the feces just pulled by gibbons while working, amusing the rangers present.
Since then, whenever he carries out nature education for students, Yang Youshan will tell the story of "ape dung to the end", which can often make everyone laugh.

"After years of observation, I feel that the family status of the 'wife' in the gibbon family is higher, for example, the moving route is generally to follow the female ape, and when grooming, most of them are 'back' to serve 'Azhen'." Yang Youshan said that their diet is also meat and vegetarian, in addition to eating fruits and leaves, they will occasionally pick up bird eggs, catch birds and lizards to eat.
"Accompanying" Tianxing gibbons for so many years, Yang Youshan's most memorable thing is to monitor the birth of "rice grains". "On December 19, 2012, we happened to be tracking gibbons, and 'Azhen' was on a tree branch for an hour and a half, and when it came out, there was a small ape hanging under its belly." Yang Youshan said that when he was born, the hair on the whole body of the little ape was white, and after about 70 days, the hair color changed from white to black.
Lin Rutao, deputy director of the Forestry and Grassland Bureau of Baoshan City, said that The Tianxing gibbon implements a "monogamous" system, and the female ape gives birth to one child every 3 years on average, and the pregnancy period is about 7 months, which is one of the reasons for its low breeding rate and small population.

In recent years, the Baoshan Management and Conservation Bureau of Gaoligong mountain national nature reserve has further strengthened the protection of Tianxing gibbon, and adopted the "three certainties" of ding ape, person and group to monitor, and the reserve has also built nearly 5,000 hectares of biological corridor belt, improving the habitat quality of wild animals.
Zhang Fu, deputy director of the Baoshan Management and Conservation Bureau of Gaoligong mountain national nature reserve, said that now, the number of tianxing gibbons in the reserve is relatively stable. By the end of 2020, there were 18 groups of 50 Celestial Gibbons living in the reserve.
"The hard work of a ranger is certain, but I still feel that I have a relationship with nature, so I have been working for 12 years." Yang Youshan said, "After so many years with gibbons, I have treated them like my own children, and I hope that more new members will join in the future." ”

They rescue gibbons
From difficulty surviving to returning to nature
In April 2019, Jingdong County rescued an outlier injured female Western Black-crowned gibbon named "Little Ping'an". In the subsequent follow-up and monitoring, the staff found that "Xiao Ping'an" showed signs of illness again, and was immediately sent to the resettlement site of the Yunnan Wildlife Shelter and Rescue Center for comprehensive examination and rehabilitation treatment. On October 9 this year, all the indicators of the "Little Ping'an" body returned to normal and had the conditions of "returning home".
In October this year, the Western Black-crowned Gibbon "Little Ping'an" was escorted by staff to the Jingdong WuliangShan Habitat safely

Let's go comprehensively together
