According to statistics, nearly 1,200 of the approximately 1,400 students admitted to MIT each year have an AMC10 score of more than 120.
93.1% of Oxbridge and Cambridge Mathematics and Computer Science students have participated in mathematics competitions, of which 43% have participated in AMC; 72.7% of the applicants for economics and related majors also have experience in mathematics competitions, and about 40% are involved in AMC.
Therefore, the name "AMC for All" is apt. AMC10/12 was held in November, and the summer vacation is just around the corner.
What is AMC?
AMC stands for American Mathematics Competitions, which is a series United States of mathematics competitions sponsored by the United States Mathematical Association of America (MAA). AMC is under the sole responsibility of the United States AMC Committee, whose members are from Harvard, MIT, Princeton University and other top universities in the United States. The purpose is to strengthen the interest and love of mathematics among young students in United States, and improve the ability and innovation ability to use mathematical knowledge to solve problems comprehensively.
The AMC competition is divided into 4 levels: AMC8, AMC10, AMC12, and AIME.
What is the AMC exam format?
AMC8 is aimed at students in Grade 8 and below, and examines the basic knowledge and application ability of mathematics, with questions ranging in difficulty from basic to slightly challenging, aiming to stimulate interest in mathematics. High scorers have the opportunity to participate in AMC10. The exam consists of 25 multiple-choice questions with a maximum score of 25 points and is held in January every year.
AMC10 is open to students in Grade 10 and below, and some outstanding AMC8 students also have the opportunity to participate. Since 2020, AMC10 has been divided into A and B rounds, with 25 multiple-choice questions in the test paper and a maximum total score of 150 points. Participants with outstanding results (the top 2.5%) will be invited to participate in the United States Invitational Mathematics Tournament (AIME). AMC10 is held annually in November and provides a platform for students to communicate with international mathematical talents.
AMC12 is for students in grade 12 and below, with a high level of difficulty, and is suitable for students who have consistently answered about 18 questions correctly in AMC10. AMC12 is also divided into A and B, and the structure of the test paper is the same as that of AMC10. The top 5% of participants in the competition have the opportunity to be invited to participate in AIME. AMC12 is held annually in November to challenge students' mathematical limits, discover and cultivate outstanding talents in the field of mathematics, and provide opportunities for mathematics enthusiasts around the world to compete and learn.
These three competitions not only test students' mathematical ability, but also serve as an excellent platform to showcase their talents and broaden their horizons.
选AMC10还是AMC12？
If you are currently in Years 9 or 10 and have a solid foundation in Mathematics, a direct challenge to AMC12 is highly recommended. Given your mathematical abilities, you are more than capable of tackling higher-level challenges. With enough preparation time, you're more than capable of progressing from AMC10 to AMC12 competition.
However, if you have a weak foundation in mathematics, it is recommended that you start with AMC10. The topics in AMC10 are relatively basic, which will provide you with a stable learning platform. As you progress, you can consider taking AMC12 again in the future, when you can achieve even better results.
AMC Race Preparation Tips
⏩ Students who are new to AMC competitions
For students who are new to the AMC competition, the first task is to familiarize themselves with the exam format. It is recommended that students first establish a complete knowledge system to ensure a solid foundation in mathematics. Subsequently, they made key breakthroughs in their weak links, and gradually improved their mathematical ability through targeted learning and practice.
⏩ Students who have a certain foundation or have already taken the exam once
For students who already have a certain foundation or have participated in AMC competitions, the goal should be clearer: to hit the AIME and strive to get the top 5% of excellent results. Although you are already familiar with the exam questions, you may still need to improve your knowledge system and make inductive summaries. It is recommended to analyze the problem-solving routines in depth, and broaden your horizons and improve your problem-solving ability by brushing high-level knowledge concept questions.
⏩ Students who have undergone systematic review
For students who have already reviewed systematically, blindly continuing to brush questions may no longer be the best strategy. At this point, more attention should be paid to summarizing and refining exam techniques. It is necessary not only to be familiar with all kinds of questions, but also to master efficient answering methods through targeted training, especially for the last few difficult questions. Since the question type of AMC10 only involves multiple-choice questions, you can try to summarize the method of "spike" a certain type of question, which will help you cope with the exam more efficiently and get a good score easily.
