Recently, the topic of "6-year-old children who drink fructose-containing drinks when they are thirsty and are diagnosed with gout" has aroused widespread discussion in the society. The reporter learned that this 6-year-old boy was the youngest gout patient treated by Rui Hongbing, chief physician of the Department of Rheumatology and Immunology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University.
"This child is relatively fat, usually drinks high fructose drinks as water, and at the age of 6, he has symptoms such as joint swelling and pain, and uric acid."
On October 16, Rui Hongbing told reporters that the main incidence of gout is middle-aged men, but in recent years, the age has become younger and younger, and male patients under the age of 20 account for almost one-third to one-quarter of the recent number of recent consultations.
Rui Hongbing said that the poor diet and exercise habits of young people are an important reason for the young age of gout.
On the one hand, with the improvement of living standards, adolescents increase their intake of high-purine foods such as meat and seafood and high-fructose foods such as beverages, which accelerates the formation of uric acid.
On the other hand, many teenagers do not like to exercise, eat too much and move less, resulting in excess energy in the body, and even obesity symptoms, which increases the risk of gout.
"The typical symptom of gout is intense, sudden swelling and pain in the joints. The pain usually starts in a small joint, most commonly in the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe, but it can also occur in areas such as the ankle, knee, wrist, or elbow joint. Rui Hongbing reminded that if there are relevant symptoms, parents should take their children to seek medical attention in time and actively intervene, otherwise it is easy to have repeated and frequent attacks.
"In addition to treatment, lifestyle modifications are the most effective means of controlling gout." Rui Hongbing suggested that for gout patients, animal offal and high-fructose drinks should be avoided, and low- and medium-intensity aerobic exercise can be increased at ordinary times, and 1500~2000 ml of water should be drunk every day to ensure urine output. In addition, alcohol is the most harmful to people with gout and should be avoided.
