On October 15, the Information Office of the State Council held a press conference. At the press conference, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the China National Space Administration, and the China Manned Space Engineering Office jointly issued the "National Space Science Medium and Long-term Development Plan (2024-2050)" (hereinafter referred to as the "Plan"). It is understood that the plan focuses on the basic principles and development goals of the development of space science in the continent and the roadmap for the development of space science in the mainland by 2050, which is also the first unified medium and long-term development plan at the national level in the field of space science in the continent.
It is understood that the plan clarifies the development goals of the continental space science, puts forward the five major scientific themes and 17 priority development directions of the extreme universe, space-time ripples, sun-earth panorama, habitable planets, and space objects to be broken through by the continent, depicts the scientific mission plan to be implemented in three stages until 2027, 2028-2035 and 2036-2050, and forms a roadmap for the development of space science in the continent by 2050. Ding Chibiao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said at the press conference that the overall goal of the development of space science in the mainland is to make a clear plan and demonstrate the implementation of national space science tasks, coordinate and strengthen mission-driven basic research, build a high-level talent team for space science, continuously achieve landmark original achievements with significant international influence, achieve high-quality development of space science, rank among the top in the world, and become a space science power. He further pointed out that among the five major scientific themes proposed by the plan that the continent is expected to achieve breakthroughs, the first theme is "extreme universe", which mainly explores the origin and evolution of the universe and reveals the physical laws under extreme cosmic conditions. Priority development directions under this theme include: dark matter and extreme universe, cosmic origin and evolution, and cosmic baryonic matter detection. Theme 2 "Ripples in Time and Space" is mainly to detect medium and low frequency gravitational waves and primordial gravitational waves, revealing the nature of gravity and space-time. The priority development direction under this theme is space gravitational wave detection. Theme 3 "Sun-Earth Panorama" explores the Earth, the Sun and the heliosphere, revealing the complex system of the Sun and the Earth, and the physical processes and laws of the overall connection between the Sun and the solar system. The priority development directions under this theme include: the earth's circulatory system, the integrated observation of the earth and the moon, space weather exploration, solar stereoscopic exploration, and outer heliosphere exploration. Theme 4 "Habitable Planets" is mainly to explore the habitability of solar system bodies and exoplanets, and to explore extraterrestrial life. Priority development areas under this theme include: sustainable development, solar system archaeology, planetary spheric mapping, extraterrestrial life exploration, and exoplanet exploration. Theme 5 "Space Physics" is mainly to reveal the laws of material movement and life activities under space conditions, and deepen the understanding of basic physics such as quantum mechanics and general relativity. Priority development directions under this theme include: microgravity science, quantum mechanics and general relativity, space life sciences, etc. When the Global Times reporter checked the plan, he found that the plan also put forward some specific projects and development goals to be implemented in the next three stages. Among them, by 2027, a number of space science missions will be demonstrated, and 5-8 space science missions will be demonstrated, including 2-3 large-scale missions that are expected to produce landmark and major results, in the scientific frontiers of dark matter and extreme universe, gravitational waves, protostellar nebulae, exoplanets, solar activity, solar system and earth system exploration. From 2028 to 2035, a series of space science missions will be deployed and implemented, including 4-5 large-scale missions, in the early universe, new physics of extreme celestial bodies, nearby habitable exoplanets, early archaeology of the solar system, the search for extraterrestrial life, solar eruptions and coronal heating mechanisms, and marginal exploration of the solar system. From 2036 to 2050, we will make revolutionary breakthroughs in basic research in the fields of the origin and evolution of the universe, the nature of time and space, the origin of the solar system and life, and manned deep space exploration, so as to expand the boundaries of human knowledge and promote the progress of human civilization. Ding Chibiao introduced at the press conference that the plan depicts a roadmap for the development of space science in the mainland by 2050, of which the first stage is to operate China's space station by 2027, implement manned lunar exploration, lunar exploration project phase IV and planetary exploration project, demonstrate and approve 5-8 space science satellite missions, and form a number of original achievements with important international influence. The second stage is from 2028 to 2035, to continue to operate China's space station, demonstrate the implementation of manned lunar exploration, international lunar research stations and other scientific missions, demonstrate the implementation of about 15 space science satellite missions, and achieve original results that rank among the top in the world. The third stage is from 2036 to 2050, when more than 30 space science missions will be demonstrated, and important fields will reach the world's leading level.
