The new JBOF architecture enables storage ISVs and cloud service providers to build high-performance, efficient, and intelligent data platforms for the AI era
SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 16, 2024 /PRNewswire/ --
Supermicro, Inc.SMCI, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMCI), a provider of integrated IT solutions for AI, cloud, storage, and 5G/Edge computing, today announced the launch of a new optimized storage system designed to support high-performance AI training, inference, and high-performance computing (HPC) workloads. The JBOF (Just a Bunch of Flash) system integrates up to four NVIDIA BlueField-3 data processing units (DPUs) in a 2U chassis to run software-defined storage workloads. Each BlueField-3 DPU supports 400Gb Ethernet or InfiniBand networking and is hardware-accelerated for compute-intensive storage and networking workloads such as encryption, compression, and erasure coding, as well as scaling AI storage needs. The dual-port JBOF architecture uses a state-of-the-art active-active cluster design to ensure scale-up of mission-critical storage applications and high availability of scale-out storage such as object storage and parallel file systems.

"Supermicro's new high-performance JBOF storage systems use our modular design approach to support E3.S or U.2 form factor SSDs and the latest PCIe Gen 5 technology to connect SSDs, DPU networks, and storage platforms," said Charles Liang, Supermicro President and CEO. "Supermicro's system design supports 24 or 36 SSDs, with 30.71TB SSDs delivering up to 1.105PB of raw capacity. Our balanced network and storage I/O design takes full advantage of the full line rate of BlueField-3 at 400 Gb/s, enabling more than 250GB/s of PCIe Gen 5 SSD bandwidth. "

Supermicro's JBOF solution incorporates NVIDIA BlueField-3, replacing traditional storage CPUs and memory subsystems with BlueField-3 DPUs and running storage applications on the DPU's 16 Arm cores. In addition to storage acceleration features such as erasure coding and decompression algorithms, BlueField-3 accelerates network performance with hardware support for RoCE (Ethernet-based Remote Direct Memory Access), GPU-directed storage, and GPU-initiated storage.
"Accelerated computing and artificial intelligence are transforming every industry and bringing many benefits to society," said Kevin Deierling, senior vice president at NVIDIA. "NVIDIA BlueField-3 DPUs enable innovative solutions like the Supermicro Petascale JBOF, which provides the foundation for extreme performance and high performance for next-generation AI data platforms."
Supermicro is working with NVIDIA to create a new JBOF ecosystem, including data platform company Hammerspace and object storage provider Cloudian, to enable these storage infrastructure software platforms to run natively on NVIDIA BlueField-3 DPUs in Supermicro JBOF. In addition, Supermicro has verified the compatibility of SSDs from Micron and Kioxia with JBOF systems, offering multiple capacity options and single- and dual-port capabilities.
"Supermicro's JBOF with NVIDIA BlueField-3 DPUs provides a highly integrated storage solution designed for large-scale AI training and analytics storage workloads." Ashish Nadkarni, group vice president and general manager, Global Infrastructure Research, IDC, said. "This implementation provides higher energy efficiency than CPU-based storage servers and lower read latency due to the direct data path provided by the JBOF and DPU architectures. Supermicro and NVIDIA have formed an ecosystem of partners that should be considered by all large AI, cloud service provider (CSP) and high-performance computing (HPC) customers. "
