On October 15, Beijing time, according to Shams of the Register, sources told ESPN that the Kings gave forward Jalen McDaniels, a second-round pick and a cash trade to the Spurs. The Spurs will cut McDaniels, and the Kings are adding roster flexibility through the deal for potential future additions. Spurs reporter Jeff McDonald added that the Spurs received an unprotected second-round pick, and they also gave the Kings a heavily protected second-round pick. So, it's a 3-for-1 deal.
It is reported that the Kings gave the Spurs an unprotected second-round pick in 2031, while the Spurs gave the Kings a second-round pick to the Bulls in 2025 (top-55 pick protected).
The Kings traded McDaniels from the Raptors in June when they sent away Davien Mitchell, Wizkov and a second-round pick. McDaniels signed a two-year, $9.2 million contract with the Raptors in the 2023 offseason, and this year marks the second year of his contract with a $4.7 million salary.
The Spurs still have room for an 8 million mid-class exception to buy McDaniels' contract. Prior to the deal, the Kings were $1 million below the luxury tax line, and with this deal, they are $5.8 million short of the luxury tax line and have two roster spots. The Spurs, for their part, got a better second-round pick with the deal.
McDaniels, 26, was the No. 52 pick in 2019 and averaged 6.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game over five seasons in the NBA. He played in 50 games for the Raptors last season, averaging 3.4 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.
