The first Chinese medicine hospital in Hong Kong was officially named "Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Hospital"

The Hong Kong SAR Government announced on the 9th that it officially named Hong Kong's first Chinese medicine hospital as the "Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Hospital" and announced the hospital's emblem. The Secretary for Health of the HKSAR Government, Mr Lo Chung-mau, said that the establishment of the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Hospital (HKCMH) is a milestone in Hong Kong's determination to promote the development of Chinese medicine, and the Government is pressing ahead with various preparatory works for the opening of the hospital in phases from the end of next year.

It is understood that the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Hospital is located at No. 1 Pak Shing Kok Road, Tseung Kwan O, which adopts a public-private partnership model and is wholly funded by the Hong Kong SAR Government.

The Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Hospital (HKCMH) is committed to providing clinical services in the form of pure Chinese medicine, Chinese medicine-based and integrative Chinese and Western medicine. The hospital will also undertake the important missions of teaching and training, scientific research, multi-stakeholder collaboration and health value creation, including providing clinical internship opportunities for students of the School of Chinese Medicine or the School of Chinese Medicine of the three local universities, and serving as a clinical training platform for practicing Chinese medicine practitioners.

In addition, the Hospital will collaborate with local, Mainland and overseas universities and educational institutions in Hong Kong to conduct clinical research, proprietary Chinese medicine development, and other research related to Chinese medicine to promote the development of Chinese medicine research.

Lo Chung-mau said that as the first hospital in Hong Kong to focus on Chinese medicine services, the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Hospital will lead Hong Kong's Chinese medicine services from primary care to the second and third tier of medical services, which is a major breakthrough in the development of Chinese medicine in Hong Kong. At the same time, as the flagship institution of local Chinese medicine, the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Hospital will interact positively with the Chinese medicine industry, give full play to Hong Kong's traditional advantages in Chinese medicine, and work together to promote the development of Chinese medicine in Hong Kong, the mainland cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the world, so as to contribute to the construction of a Chinese medicine highland in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the overall development of Chinese medicine in the country.

The emblem of the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Hospital is based on the shape of the building, combined with the character "中", and integrates the architectural features of the building, imitating the design of the "Moon Gate" in a classical Chinese garden, which symbolically leads the public into the broad and profound world of Chinese medicine. The overall design of the emblem not only showcases the characteristics of traditional Chinese architecture, but also presents the colors of Chinese culture, reflecting the unique positioning of the hospital in Hong Kong's medical system.

In 2021, the HKSAR Government appointed Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) as the contractor through a tender process, and HKBU set up a company limited by guarantee (i.e. HKBU Chinese Medicine Hospital Limited) as the operator in accordance with the requirements of the service deed to be responsible for the management, operation and maintenance of the hospital.
