Lost contact after the graduation ceremony

According to Mr. Tian, his son Tian Ye was born in 2001. In 2020, Tian Ye was admitted to Hechi University and started his university life in the School of Artificial Intelligence and Manufacturing. In 2024, it is the graduation season for children. In June, Mr. Tian received a call from Tian Ye, saying that the school would have a graduation ceremony on June 19, and he could leave on the 21st and arrive home on the 22nd.

On the 22nd, Tian Ye called again and said that some procedures had not been completed, and he could not leave the school until he signed for the dormitory hygiene. On the 25th, Mr. Tian received another call from his son, saying that he would arrive home on the 27th. However, on the 27th, after the parents prepared their son's favorite meal, they did not wait for the child's figure.

Late that night, the family called the police for help. On June 28, the local police in Hechi called up surveillance near the school and found that Tian Ye walked out of the school gate at 16:40 on June 27, and finally disappeared from the surveillance near a local bridge. The school and the local police launched a search for them, but there was no news.

On June 30, Mr. Tian rushed to Tianye's dormitory and found his son's suitcase, computer, and mobile phone all left in the dormitory. "He didn't take anything with him when he left, and his bank card and ID card were left in the dormitory." After Tian Ye's mobile phone was opened through technical means, he found that there was no information in it, and all photos and chat software were deleted, leaving no clues.

Tian Ye's brother-in-law told reporters that he learned from Tian Ye's head teacher that Tian Ye's situation in school was generally normal, but he failed 8 subjects and could not graduate smoothly and needed to be retaken. After entering the school, Tian Ye has failed the subject from the first semester, and there are one or more failed subjects in the following semesters. Some of these failed subjects have been retaken, but they still have not passed, and a few of them have no record of retaking at all.

Mr. Tian was very surprised to learn of this situation, and the child had never told his family about it.

Don't want to give up looking

After the incident, Mr. Tian repeatedly wrote to the school, asking the school to continue to search for the field, asking the school to apologize in writing and negotiate compensation. At the same time, the family believes that the school's daily teaching and mental health management are seriously lacking, and requires the school to improve the relevant management system to make up for the loopholes. The school replied to him that Tian Ye lost contact after graduating and leaving school, and said that Tian Ye was an adult, and all his actions were determined by himself, and there was no basis for compensation in accordance with the law.

In September this year, the Hechi police preliminarily identified Tian Ye as a missing person. The local police on-site registration form reads: After the police made every effort to investigate, the existence of illegal and criminal acts was ruled out, but no relevant clues about Tian Ye have been found, and he was preliminarily identified as a missing person, and Tian Ye was entered into the national missing persons database.

On October 9, the School of Artificial Intelligence and Manufacturing of Hechi University replied in writing to Tian Ye's family, saying that after Tian Ye left the school on his own and lost contact, the school has organized relevant personnel to cooperate with the public security organs to search, and will continue to keep in touch with the public security organs in the future, and cooperate with the public security organs and family members to do relevant work in accordance with the law.

On the morning of the 12th, the reporter called Hechi College, and a staff member of the school's school office said that the incident had been following up and dealing with it since it happened, and the Letters and Visits Office had replied to all the demands of the family. The reporter asked Tian Ye about his study and life, as well as his attitude towards handling the incident, and the staff said that they needed to understand it specifically before replying. The reporter contacted the local police but did not receive a response.

In the eyes of Tian Ye's sister, Tian Ye likes to read history books, and often tells relatives and friends stories in famous books such as "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" when he is at home. Mr. Tian's father, Mr. Tian, said that he himself suffered a second-degree serious injury due to an early fall, and his wife suffered from thyroid cancer, but Mr. Tian did not want to give up the search, and he also hoped that the school could give a fair and reasonable answer.

point of view

College students disappear after 8 "failed courses", is the school responsible?

It has been four months since the disappearance, and the personal safety of the college student is worrying, and I hope to be safe as soon as possible. Another noteworthy thing about this matter is that the student could not graduate from as many as 8 subjects, but the parents said that they had not known about it before.

In this regard, some people think that it is the responsibility of the students themselves, and do not tell their parents the real situation; Some people also questioned the school's failure to fulfill its educational and management responsibilities, failed to communicate with parents in a timely manner about the student's problems, and asked parents to urge him to take his studies and other related issues seriously.

It is the university's discretion to decide whether or not to send the student's transcript to the parents. From the perspective of respecting the independence and autonomy of college students, universities have a reason not to send transcripts to parents. However, for college students who fail many courses and cannot successfully graduate, universities should not be too "detached", but should establish a corresponding early warning mechanism in light of the actual situation of mainland students, and notify parents of their academic situation in a timely manner.

In the past, many universities in mainland China did not send students' transcripts to parents. But in recent years, more and more universities are sending transcripts. The reason is that many parents question the school's failure to fulfill its management responsibilities when their children fail the course and face withdrawal. Sending students' report cards to parents to let them know and cooperate with the school to "discipline" has become a realistic choice for the school to respond to parents' questions.

However, this practice has also made university management increasingly "high-school", which is suspected to be detrimental to cultivating college students' autonomy and sense of responsibility.

In fact, universities do not need to send all students' grades to parents, and for college students who have become adults, parents should also learn to let go and let them learn to be responsible for themselves. However, for college students with serious learning attitudes and academic problems, universities should also start from the actual situation of the students, give early warning of their academic problems, and contact their parents in a timely manner.

According to reports, the relatives of the missing college student told reporters that he learned from the student's homeroom teacher that the student's situation at school was generally normal, but he failed eight subjects and could not graduate smoothly and needed to retake. After entering the school, the student failed in the first semester, and in the following semesters, there were one or more failed courses. Some of these failed subjects have been retaken, but they still have not passed, and a few of them have no record of retaking at all. Mr. Tian was very surprised to learn of this situation, the child had never told his family about it.

If the statement is true, it can be determined that the school did not inform the parents of the student's academic situation beforehand. Considering the reality of basic education in mainland China, many students lack the awareness and ability of independent learning and self-management, and it is obvious that universities should inform their parents in a timely manner of the situation that students have begun to fail in their freshman year, and the parents should urge them to pay attention to academic problems.

I hope that this college student can return safely, and not go to extremes. Through this incident, schools also need to reflect on and adjust their attitudes and management methods towards students' academic and other issues. Of course, there is no problem in respecting students' autonomy and independence, but it is also necessary to explore the establishment of relevant early warning systems, issue early warnings to students and parents with serious academic problems and other special circumstances in a timely manner, and take necessary measures to coordinate with home and school to avoid accidents.
