Premier Zhu Rongji's early years were quite difficult. Soon after he entered junior high school, Changsha was captured by the Japanese army, and he had to move to Xiangxi with his family for refuge. Despite the turbulent environment, he continued to study hard and hone his abilities. After entering the university, he encountered the Liberation War, during which he experienced countless difficulties and setbacks, and even faced the danger of his life at one point.

After the founding of the country, the country gradually achieved stability and peace, and he was finally able to concentrate on the pursuit of knowledge. After graduating from university, he was assigned to work in an industrial department in Northeast China, and only a year later, because of his outstanding performance, he was transferred to a unit directly under the central government to take up a position, and successively served as a deputy department and a cadre in the main department. However, during the turbulent period, he was also hit to a certain extent, and was sent to the grassroots labor reform for five years, until 1975, when he was reinstated.
After the turbulent period, he moved through a number of key departments and achieved impressive political success. In 1987, when the post of mayor of Shanghai became vacant, the Party Central Committee decided to open recruitment within the government to select the most capable people to fill the position. At this time, Premier Zhu happened to want to exercise himself in the local area, so he resolutely signed up for the election. At the end of that year, he was elected mayor of Shanghai after he delivered a passionate speech at the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee's work conference, which successfully won over all the audience.
Premier Zhu is a pragmatic person who does not like to stay in his office and spends most of his time walking around and inspecting at the grassroots level. As soon as he finds a problem, he usually immediately calls the person in charge of the relevant department and asks for a solution as soon as possible. Once, when he went to visit a newly opened large wet market, he was suddenly stopped by an old lady. The old lady held Premier Zhu's hand tightly and confided in him her bitterness. She said that there was a problem with the drainage system near her home, which would clog when it rained, causing sewage to flow everywhere and smelling bad, which had seriously affected the daily lives of residents.
Premier Zhu attached great importance to this, and he immediately called the responsible person of the municipal department to inquire about the details. The other party said that it would check as soon as possible and send someone to solve the problem. However, Premier Zhu became angry on the spot, saying that the people had already complained to him in person, and there was no need for any more verification. If the problem cannot be solved within three days, he is willing to resign on his own initiative!
After Jiang Zemin left Shanghai, Zhu Rongji took over as secretary of the Shanghai Prefectural City CPC Committee and entered the Politburo. At this time, it had entered the 90s, and after ten years of development, Guangdong achieved its rise and became the economic center of the entire south, with a remarkably high per capita GDP. However, Shanghai started relatively late, and its economic development has been mediocre, which made Premier Zhu very anxious. He wrote to the State Council several times to fight for policies and resources for Shanghai, but he was frequently denied.
In 1991, when Deng Xiaoping went south to Shanghai to recuperate, Premier Zhu took the opportunity to confide in him about the difficulties encountered in Shanghai's development, fearing that it would be difficult to achieve its rise. Upon learning of this, Deng Xiaoping immediately returned to Beijing and instructed the State Council to find a way to support Shanghai, not to watch Shanghai struggle in a difficult situation. Soon after, Premier Ji Pengfei approved several projects for Shanghai and provided a sum of money as "start-up capital" for Premier Zhu's administration.
Premier Zhu was very happy and immediately began to go all out, and soon achieved remarkable results. Soon after, on the recommendation of Deng Gong, he was transferred to the State Council as the head of the urban construction, industry, finance and other departments. In 1998, with the unanimous consent of the Politburo, the Central Committee and the National People's Congress, he was appointed Premier of the State Council and became the leader of the executive branch of the country.
After taking office, on the one hand, he continued to strengthen the building of a clean and honest government and severely cracked down on corruption, and on the other hand, he promoted the expansion of reform to the central and western regions, coordinated the development of the whole country, and implemented the concept of common prosperity. At the beginning of the new century, he retired smoothly and lived a quiet life, rarely participating in public events.
He compiled his speeches into a collection of essays, which were warmly welcomed by the market because of their detailed content and clear views, and sold hundreds of thousands of copies. All of the 40 million royalties he received were donated to charities to help the underprivileged. It is worth mentioning that since his retirement, Premier Zhu has always maintained the status of an ordinary person, never put on a show, and has always treated others with a humble attitude. In his spare time, he would listen to Peking Opera to cultivate his sentiments, pass the time, and sometimes write some essays, but never publish them in any media.
In addition, he personally always adhered to the taboo of never touching political topics. Whenever he chatted with others, he immediately remained silent and never expressed any opinion when it came to current political issues. Today, Premier Zhu is 96 years old and his temples are gray, but his spirit is still strong, and his speech is clear and organized, and there is no ambiguity at all.
