The winner is still the Hollywood blockbuster "Alien: Death Ship" (Hong Kong translation "Alien: Romulus"), which grossed HK$1.913 million last week and reached a total of HK$23.456 million in 25 days of release. However, despite achieving four consecutive titles, the film's box office drop was bigger than expected (down 60% from the previous week), meaning that the possibility of breaking through HK$30 million has been reduced to zero.
The runner-up was the new Hollywood film "Strange Archmage" (Hong Kong translation of "Ghost Family"), which was officially released last Thursday and earned 1.651 million Hong Kong dollars in 4 days. There is no doubt that for a European and American blockbuster, this first week of results is undoubtedly dismal, and considering that the Mid-Autumn Festival schedule is approaching and many new films are coming, it may be difficult for its final results to exceed 10 million Hong Kong dollars.
The third runner-up is the Hong Kong film "Zha Zhi 3" starring Huang Zongze, Zhang Jicong, Chen Jiale and others, with a box office of 1.338 million Hong Kong dollars last week and a total of 2.767 million Hong Kong dollars in 11 days of release. Because this result is similar to the previous week, and even fell slightly, it is enough to prove that the box office peak of this film has passed, and the future potential is extremely low, and there is little hope of breaking 5 million Hong Kong dollars.
In fourth place is the Japan anime film "Look Back" (Hong Kong translation "Look Back") with a box office of HK$1.082 million last week and a total of HK$2.716 million in 11 days of release. Obviously, this is another work that is difficult to break 5 million Hong Kong dollars.
In fifth place is the Hollywood horror film "Long Legs", which grossed 734,000 Hong Kong dollars last week and accumulated 2.223 million Hong Kong dollars in 11 days of release.
Ranking sixth is the mainland film "Catching Dolls" starring Shen Teng, Ma Li and others, with a box office of HK$638,000 last week and a total of HK$2.536 million in 18 days of release. It must be pointed out that this film is the only mainland film in Hong Kong to enter the top 10 at the box office for three consecutive weeks in the past six months, and the performance is not too bad.
In seventh place is the Japan anime film "Crayon Shin-chan: Our Dinosaur Diaries", which grossed 393,000 Hong Kong dollars last week and reached 7.822 million Hong Kong dollars in 31 days of release. In all fairness, this is a good movie, but it was only because there were too many Japan anime movies released at the same time that it failed to break 10 million Hong Kong dollars.
In eighth place is the Korea film "Pilot" (Hong Kong translation "Male Female Pilot"), which grossed 391,000 Hong Kong dollars last week and accumulated 2.468 million Hong Kong dollars in 25 days of release. From a box office point of view, the film's release in Hong Kong was a failure, but it is a miracle that it can be said to be on the list again two weeks after falling off the list.
In ninth place is the Hollywood blockbuster "Deadpool and Wolverine" (Hong Kong translation "Deadpool and Werewolf"), which grossed HK$387,000 last week and reached a total of HK$47.698 million in 47 days of release. It is worth mentioning that the box office accumulated by this film has ranked third in the overall box office ranking list of Hong Kong in 2024, and the results can be described as very good.
In tenth place is the Hollywood animated film "Brain Agent 2" (Hong Kong translation "Brain Friends 2"), which grossed HK$334,000 last week and reached HK$83.887 million in 60 days of release. This result ranks second in Hong Kong's 2024 box office rankings, second only to "The Siege of the Kowloon Walled City".
To sum up, Hollywood movies and overseas films are still the dominant side, but the situation of Chinese films returning to the list and narrowing the weekly box office gap still indicates that the period of dominance of foreign films for many months is coming to an end.
