When Tesla owners bought a new car this year, about half of them abandoned electric vehicles in favor of internal combustion engine vehicles. Only 32% maintain an electric car. The data on maintaining electric vehicles has increased significantly compared to the survey conducted four years ago, indicating that the electric vehicle market is likely to continue, and is attracting attention.

According to Edmonds, an automotive research firm in United States, 51% of Tesla owners who changed cars this year switched to pure diesel locomotives. The remaining 10% opted for a hybrid and 6% opted for a plug-in hybrid. McKinsey also said in a recent survey: "46% of United States electric vehicle owners will choose an internal combustion engine as their next vehicle." ”
This figure seems to be a warning to Tesla and the possible shrinking of the EV market, but it is a considerable improvement from the past. Edmonds, a United States automotive research firm, said that from historical data, while the trend of replacing Tesla with gasoline cars is still significant, it has actually improved. In 2019, a staggering 71% of Teslas were replaced with petrol cars. This number is decreasing year by year: 72% in 2021, 66% in 2022 and 55% in 2023.
Previously, more than half of Tesla owners were inclined to leave the EV market. This change means that owning an EV in North America is becoming less inconvenient, but it shows that the infrastructure will need to be significantly improved in the future to make owning an EV more attractive.
Another interesting point is that more and more Tesla car buyers are being replaced by pure electric vehicles from other automakers. This is somewhat to be expected, given that Tesla is increasingly challenged among the EV frontrunners.
Finally, hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles are not popular as an alternative to Tesla's electric vehicles. That said, these vehicles are not as attractive to users who ride Tesla electric vehicles.
Comparatively speaking, the proportion of Tesla owners who have switched to PHEVs is much higher than the proportion of the overall PHEV market. According to the analysis, this is because previous EV owners already have experience with electric vehicles or charging piles, and the advantage of PHEVs is that they can drive the internal combustion engine when charging is difficult.
