People are advised to seek shelter in case of dangerous weather.
Environment and climate changeHeather Pimiskern, a meteorologist in Canada, said atmospheric conditions in the region make thunderstorms prone to severe.
"Tonight in Southern Alberta, we are facing an unstable atmospheric situation," Pimiskern said in an interview with CBC News Monday night.
She said the thunderstorms were located east of Calgary and were moving eastward. They are expected to reach the Saskatchewan border and continue to move east.
Calgary, which was initially under an emergency alert, was under a severe thunderstorm alert as of shortly after 11 p.m. Monday, according to the Environmental Canada website.
Mr Pimiskern said the largest hailstone received by the environment department from Calgary was about 4.5 centimetres in diameter, the size of a golf ball.

"We are prioritizing the safety of all our travelers and employees and are clearing the affected area. We are currently assessing the damage and its impact on operations," the statement read, adding that no casualties have been reported at this time.
The spokesperson also said that due to the damage, delays in and out of flights are expected at the airport, and passengers are advised to contact the airline to confirm the status of their flights.
During the storm, passenger Jodie Russett said she saw part of the airport's ceiling fall.

Russett, who is traveling from Toronto to Kelowna in Canada British Colombia via Calgary, told CBC News that she needs to decide whether to stay overnight at the airport and wait for a delayed flight or stay in a hotel in Calgary until morning.
"What can we do? It's not anyone's fault, right? ”
Russett并不孤单。 旅客Emmanuel Ebere也在周一晚上被困在卡尔加里机场。
"We don't have a lot of information about when we'll take off or if we'll be able to take off tonight," Ebere said.
"It's not anyone's fault. Nature strikes, and I guess we can only adapt to the situation and stay calm...... I guess we just have to go with the flow. ”
Many Chinese living in Calgary shared videos and photos, jokingly calling Calgary, the world's most livable city, "a big hail for people to be stoned to death when they go out"
