Former Leicester City manager Craig · Shakespeare has died at the age of 60.
Back in October 2023, Shakespeare was undergoing cancer treatment. He took on the role of manager of Leicester City in 2017 and has also played for West Bromwich Albion, Hull City, Watford, Aston Villa and Norwich City during his managerial career.
In a statement issued by the Association of League Managers on behalf of his family, it reads: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Craig · Shakespeare. "Craig passed away peacefully this morning at home, surrounded by his family.
"While his family is immensely proud of his football achievements as a player and coach, he will always be a loving and loving husband, father, son, brother and uncle for us, his family." This loss is devastating for all of us, and we ask for privacy at this extremely difficult time as we try to accept and mourn the passing of a very special someone. "The family would like to thank and thank for the many prayers and good wishes that have been sent out over the past few difficult months, many of which we are unable to respond to, but which mean so much to Craig and the family."
Shakespeare played a key role in Leicester's promotion to the Premier League under Nigel · Pearson and winning the title as Claudio · Ranieri's assistant in the 2015/16 season. He took over from Claudio Ranieri in February 2017 and worked full-time to lead the Foxes out of any relegation fears. Later that year, he was fired.
Shakespeare was also part of Sam'· Allardyce's England coaching staff but left the role after the former West Ham manager was sacked after just one game.
A statement from Leicester City added: "Craig is not just a staff member, he is part of the Leicester City family. His warmth, kindness, and genuine interest in people made him beloved by all. His loss will be felt deeply by many of his friends in Leicester City and elsewhere. Supporters, colleagues and friends will never forget the immeasurable impact Craig had on the football club and its staff.
"Everyone at Leicester City Football Club extends their deepest condolences to Craig's wife, Karen, and children, Elle and Jed, at this difficult time. All those who know, respect, and love Craig share their pain. He left a legacy in Leicester City like everyone else, and while we grieve his passing, we are grateful to have such a special connection with someone whose passion and spirit will resonate with all who are fortunate enough to know him for a long time.
