Hungarian Legend - "The Running Major" Ferenc Puskas (Part 2)

During his eight years with Real Madrid, Puskas was equally outstanding in the national team: scoring 84 goals in 85 appearances for the Hungarian national team, he was the best scorer in the history of the Hungarian national team.

On August 20, 1945, the 18-year-old Puskas was selected for the Hungarian national team for the first time, and in his debut with Austria, he scored 1 goal to help the team win 5-2, and at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games, as the captain of the Puskas scored 4 goals, with Hidegutti and Kochis to form a golden attack line, leading the Hungarian men's football team to win the gold medal. In 1953, Puskas led Hungary defeated England 6:3 at Wembley Stadium, becoming the first national team to beat England on home soil.

At the 1954 World Cup, Hungary was the number one favourite to win the title, and Hungary swept South Korea 9-0 in the first two games of the group stage. In the third Hungarian 8-3 slaughter of West Germany, Puskas was injured by opposing centre-back Riyebricht, missing the quarter-finals and semi-finals. But Hungary still beat Brazil 4-2 and Uruguay 4-2 to reach the final against West Germany.

In the final, Puskas scored the second goal with an injury, but was eventually defeated by West Germany 2-3, and the battle was later made into the movie "Bern Miracle". The miraculous reversal of the German team has also become a permanent regret for Hungarians, and the Hungarian golden generation has missed the best opportunity to reach the top of the world.

Puskas was ill in his later years, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, and lived a scrawled life. Fortunately, Real Madrid has been paying puskas every year since 2000. In August 2005, Real Madrid and the Hungarian All-Stars played a friendly match in Budapest to raise money to treat Puskas.

On the afternoon of 17 November 2006, Puskas died of illness at the age of 79, and because of his great contribution to Hungarian football, the Hungarian government held a state funeral for Puskas on 9 December, which was attended by five hungarian top leaders, including then President Shoyom Rasło, as well as representatives of diplomatic envoys, governments, parties and sports circles, and held military honor performances and flag-at-half-mast ceremonies.
