On July 13, the film opened a large-scale screening, with a single-day box office of about 156 million yuan on the first day of screening, and the box office market on the day successfully exceeded 300 million yuan.

According to the data, the comedy movie "Catching the Doll" tells the story of Ma Chenggang (played by Shen Teng) and Chunlan (played by Ma Li), a wealthy businessman living in Xihong City, who "take an unusual path", hoping to cultivate their son into a talent through "poor raising".

In fact, the performance of "Catching the Doll" has exceeded expectations. Maoyan data shows that the film was screened on July 13, and the screening and pre-sale box office exceeded 500 million yuan.

In terms of word-of-mouth, Maoyan and Taopiao have a score of 9.5, providing a foundation for the follow-up box office to climb out of the long run.

As of July 16, Maoyan Professional predicts that its total box office will reach about 3.7 billion yuan. In addition, the summer movie "Silent Killing" also achieved good box office performance, and Maoyan Professional Edition is expected to have a total box office of about 1.58 billion yuan.

Talking about the main reasons for the change in performance, Wanda Film bluntly said that in the first half of 2024, due to the insufficient supply of top films in the second quarter and the sluggish box office performance of the market, the overall recovery of the Chinese film market is less than expected. In the first half of the year, the company's domestic theaters achieved a box office of 3.13 billion yuan (excluding service fees), a year-on-year decrease of 14.5%, and the number of moviegoers was 75 million, a year-on-year decrease of 14.3%.

However, Wanda Film also said that although the film market was relatively flat in the second quarter, with the arrival of the summer season, the market still has confidence in the continued recovery of the industry in the second half of the year. High-quality top films are expected to promote the continuous release of movie-going demand, drive the steady growth of the box office and moviegoers, and are expected to have a positive impact on the film market and the company's cinema operation.

According to the real-time data of Lighthouse Professional Edition, as of 19:40 on July 18, the total box office (including pre-sale) of the 2024 summer season (June-August) exceeded 5 billion yuan, and "Silent Killing", "Catching the Doll" and "There is a Commissary by the Cloud" are temporarily among the top three on the box office list. Among them, "Catching the Doll" entered the top ten of the 2024 mainland film box office list on the second day of its release, and the cumulative box office exceeded 800 million yuan in just 3 days after its release.

"From the perspective of the monthly box office trend, after the strongest Spring Festival stalls in 2024, the overall performance of the box office is flat, and the year-on-year growth rate of the monthly box office from March to June 2024 is +46.2%, -21.9%, -13.5%, and -46.0%, respectively, and the month-on-month growth rate is -74.9%, -19.7%, +31.8%, and -24.4% respectively.

Huatai Securities believes that the adjusted cinema line has basically reflected pessimistic expectations, and the industry is expected to improve marginally and usher in allocation opportunities. The hot screenings of "Catching the Doll" and "Silent Killing" are expected to stimulate audience demand and market vitality, and drive the film market to recover. At the same time, in the second half of 2024, blockbuster movies will be released one after another in the film market. With the advancement of film project production, the supply of content is expected to continue to improve, driving the prosperity of the film industry to show a marginal recovery.
