【Quick Look】A major discovery by Chinese scientists! +1 for new species!

Researchers from the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other institutions recently published a paper in the English academic journal Journal of Animal Taxonomy, saying that they had studied a species similar to the ghost moth found in the South China Sea in 2016, and through morphological and genetic comparative analysis, it was clear that it was significantly different from the ghost moth, determined that it was a new species, and named it "pseudo-ghost moth".

In terms of biological taxonomy, the ghost clam is a genus of ghosts in the family Ghost Clam, and it is also the only extant species of the ghost cricket order that has been widely recognized before. Qiu Dajun, a researcher at the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced that in 1903, Germany marine biologist Karl · Chuen first discovered the ghost clam in the deep sea, which often lives between 600 and 900 meters in water, which is almost impossible to reach by light, and the oxygen content in the water body is very low.

In September 2016, Chinese scientists collected a specimen at a depth of 800 to 1,000 meters in the southeast sea area of Hainan Island. The research team compared the morphology of the ghost clam with that of the ghost cricket and found that the tail shape, lower jaw shape, and luminous organ position were all significantly different from the ghost cricket. Through genetic analysis, it was found that it and the ghost clam were two branches with a large genetic distance on the evolutionary tree, which confirmed that the collected specimen was a new species, becoming the second extant species known to the ghost cricket.
