The 78th Avignon Theatre Festival will be held in France from June 29 to July 21, 2024, and the commissioned work "Bold Mama and Her Children" and the incubation work "Cold Blood" will be presented during the Avignon Theatre Festival, showing people from all over the world the new face of the development of Chinese original theater and the new style of Chinese Mesozoic and young directors.
Founded in 1947 by the famous dramatist Jean Villars, the Avignon Theatre Festival is one of the most important contemporary performing arts events in the world and a bellwether for the development of the global theatre industry, bringing together the most cutting-edge international creations. Every July, Avignon becomes the City Theatre, whose buildings are transformed into majestic and wondrous performance venues that attract tens of thousands of theatre lovers.

Directed by Zhao Miao, promoter of the Global Young Chinese Theatre Directors Talent Program, Bold Mom and Her Children is a powerful and new adaptation of Brecht's classic anti-war drama
In August 2023, "Bold Mom and Her Children" had its world premiere in Edinburgh, UK, and won the "Asian Arts Special Repertoire Award" and "Special Performance Award" at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In November of the same year, the play was unveiled in China during the Guilin Art Festival, which also aroused extensive and heated discussions. At this year's Avignon Theatre Festival, "Bold Mama and Her Children" once again went overseas to bring a new Chinese theatre experience to international audiences.
- Synopsis -
Written by German playwright Brecht during his exile in Sweden at the end of 1939, "Bold Mama and Her Children" is a historical drama about the war against fascism. The story tells the tragedy of the heroine "Bold Mother" with two sons and a mute girl, pulling a truck to sell with the army, and seeing war as a way to earn a living and a source of wealth, and finally ending up with the tragedy of family ruin.

Written and directed by young director Liu Guangyuan, the drama "In Cold Blood" skillfully uses the form of "play within a play" to connect two "revenge" stories, dissect the cruel life from a unique perspective, and outline the past and reality of love and hate while narrowing the distance between the audience.
Since its premiere at the Guilin Arts Festival in November last year, "In Cold Blood" has met audiences in Nanning, Liuzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Beijing and other places, and has been invited to participate in the 2024 Daliangshan International Theater Festival and the 2024 Beijing New Drama Exhibition, which has received unanimous praise from inside and outside the industry. This trip to Avignon is the first international appearance of "In Cold Blood", and it is also a new step in the incubation process of the "Talent Program".

A husband and wife who lost their only son in a car accident three years ago are reunited in the rehearsal hall during a play, and the director's wife uses the content she created to stimulate her husband, who is responsible for the accident, but the husband wants to get their lives back on track. On the surface, they are talking about the issue of artistic creation, but in fact, they are talking about the death of their son and how to deal with the life after the death of their beloved.
Just like the theme of the script they are composing: "Brothers who carry on the past and forge ahead into the future, please don't be too cruel to me; For if you have mercy on us, God will also give you more mercy. ”
