The influence of Zen on Chinese painting is vast and far-reaching, and considering the Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism that influenced traditional Chinese culture, it can be concluded that Confucianism gives content to Chinese painting, Taoism gives spirit to Chinese painting, and Zen Buddhism gives Chinese painting a realm.

It was also under the influence of Zen Buddhism that Chinese aesthetics made its first major breakthrough in the Wei and Jin dynasties, that is, after the transformation from Confucianism-led educational aesthetics to Zhuangzi's Qiwu Yiqi aesthetics, and completed its second major breakthrough from the late Tang Dynasty to the Northern Song Dynasty, that is, the transformation from the Wei and Jin dynasties' Qiwu Yiqi aesthetics to the natural mind aesthetics of Zen Buddhism, which was a great contribution of Zen Buddhism to the development of Chinese painting.
