Dan Hauser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, explains why the GTA franchise has never been adapted into a film during his tenure, but admits that "the environment is not what it used to be, and it's a great time to make a movie."
Considering the success stories of video games being adapted into hit TV series and films, such as Fallout and Super Mario Bros., one of the biggest cliffhangers in the past was bringing GTA to the screen.
However, this wish has never been realized. According to Hauser, when he was approached to discuss making a film of this classic IP, he decisively refused because R Star had no control over the entire process. In his latest interview, he said: "After a couple of embarrassing meetings, the company's top brass questioned: 'Why do you want to do this?' You want to make a film, but we don't have enough say to take huge risks, and we have to pay for it with our own money. ’”
Hauser didn't say much about it, adding: "Even though we have billions of dollars worth of intellectual property, making a film is still not cost-effective and risky from an economic point of view." At that time, it was widely believed that the quality of film adaptations of games was worrying. ”
Today, however, the situation is very different. Hauser admits that "it's a new era," and that there have been a number of recent successes, such as Uncharted and Super Mario Bros. In addition, a number of game adaptations such as Detective Pikachu, Gran Turismo, Mortal Kombat, Sonic the Hedgehog and Assassin's Creed have also made it to the big screen.
Although TV series such as "Fallout" and "The Last of Us" are the most influential and highly rated.
Will this convince R-stars to get involved? We don't know that with GTA 6 launching next year, this probably won't be the first thing they're thinking at the moment.
However, if you want to adapt the movie, the editor thinks that the most potential in the R Star series should be "Red Dead Redemption 2".
