"What does the system of socialism with Chinese characteristics consist of?" "How to understand the superiority of the socialist system with Chinese characteristics?" "Why does the Chinese Communist Party insist on being people-centered?" Nineteen-year-old Yu Yueyong wanted to find out.

In the lecture "Outline of Modern Chinese History" by Wang Feng, a teacher at the School of Marxism of Beijing Normal University, Yu Yueyong and his classmates learned about the origin, development and achievements of the socialist system with Chinese characteristics, such as the Chinese Communist Party's pioneering path of Chinese-style modernization with distinctive characteristics in the process of promoting socialist modernization, which fully demonstrated the unique advantages of the socialist system with Chinese characteristics.

Over the years, Wang Feng has been thinking about how to integrate institutional self-confidence education into ideological and political classrooms. He believes that the essence of ideological and political courses is to be reasonable, and to explain clearly the advantages of the socialist system with Chinese characteristics from the aspects of historical background, theoretical basis and practical achievements, which can help young students strengthen their self-confidence in the socialist system with Chinese characteristics. For example, the inevitability of history and the people's choice of Marxism, the inevitability of choosing the Communist Party of China, the inevitability of choosing the socialist road, and the inevitability of choosing reform and opening up.

"I hope to understand the fundamental reasons for China's rapid economic development and long-term social stability."

There are many students who feel the same way as Yu Yueyong. Liao Songtao, from Taoyuan County, Hunan Province, has personally experienced the changes in his hometown, and has also witnessed the magnificent process of poverty alleviation and rural revitalization. "When I was a child, I would go out on a dirt road full of potholes, and I would always get muddy on rainy days. Now cement roads have been built in front of the house, and the surrounding residents have also broken out a road to prosperity in the tea industry. In the 10 years since the change, Liao Songtao has often heard adults mention the term "poverty alleviation".

After entering the School of Marxism of Beijing Normal University as a graduate student, Liao Songtao deepened his understanding of words such as poverty alleviation and rural revitalization through theoretical study and practical investigation. When he saw that more and more rural areas were also rejuvenated like his hometown, he more deeply realized the meaning of the sentence "eliminating poverty, improving people's livelihood, and achieving common prosperity are the essential requirements of socialism and the unswerving goal of our party."

Wang Feng said: "Faith is an inner spiritual force, and institutional self-confidence education can educate and guide young students to become firm believers in the socialist system with Chinese characteristics from the perspective of institutional advantages." ”

How can we do a good job in ideological and political courses? Wang Feng believes that teachers of ideological and political courses must face the major theories and practical problems in reality, answer students' doubts and guide them to strengthen their self-confidence in the socialist system with Chinese characteristics by explaining the principles of ideological and political courses in depth, thoroughly and lively. Usually, he will take the initiative to discuss current hot topics with his classmates, including some seemingly sensitive topics. For example, "did the Western invasion bring modern civilization to China?", "Can Western-style democracy really be universalized?", "Is Western modernization the only way?", and other comments that college students might see on social media.

Wang Feng told the students that the natural resources, historical foundation, cultural traditions, and scale of each country are very different, which determines that the modernization path of each country is also very different. Chinese-style modernization is socialist modernization under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the correct path to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation explored based on China's own national conditions.

It is with the teaching concept of "respecting every student" that Wang Feng has become what students call "a teacher who gives particularly interesting lectures". "He never rejects answering our 'weird' questions, nor does he blindly judge our seemingly rebellious behavior as 'wrong.'" Liu Huanxu, who is about to graduate from the School of Mathematics of Beijing Normal University, has had moments of "confusion", such as "whether to join the Communist Party of China", "what is the real meaning of joining the party in college", and "how to become a qualified member of the Communist Party of China". Liu Huanxu felt from the bottom of his heart that he needed to seriously understand these issues before submitting an application for joining the party.

Once during a recess, Liu Huanxu asked Wang Feng about the meaning of joining the party and whether he wanted to join the party. Combined with the content of the course, Wang Feng told her about the reasons and process of the founding of the Communist Party of China. "The Communist Party of China is an organization of advanced elements, and joining the Communist Party is not to create conditions for its own development, but to influence and benefit more people with its advanced nature." At the end of the conversation, Wang Feng threw an open question to Liu Huanxu: "Do you have an answer to the question of 'why did you join the party'?" ”

Wang Feng has been thinking about how to better "understand" this generation of young people. In order to obtain more abundant and three-dimensional first-hand information, Wang Feng spent nearly half a year doing a survey on "college students' cognition of the socialist system with Chinese characteristics and their self-confidence". A questionnaire survey was conducted among 500 university students from different universities across the country, and 20 of them were interviewed in a structured interview for several hours.

This survey brings out a lot of data to think about. For example, the higher the level of understanding of the socialist system with Chinese characteristics, the higher the degree of self-confidence in the system. Most of the respondents believed that the comprehensive quality of ideological and political teachers had an impact on the integration of institutional self-confidence education into ideological and political courses. The higher the respondents' evaluation of ideological and political courses, the higher their belief that ideological and political courses are effective in improving institutional self-confidence. In the book "Research on the Integration of Institutional Self-confidence Education into Ideological and Political Theory Courses in Colleges and Universities", Wang Feng systematically presented the results of this survey and discussed the methods of integrating institutional self-confidence education into ideological and political courses in colleges and universities.

"Institutional self-confidence education is not only a kind of knowledge education, but also a kind of value education." Wang Feng found that for college students who lack social work experience and practical experience, their understanding of the world, national conditions, party conditions, and social conditions comes largely from books and classrooms, and is especially deeply influenced by ideological and political courses and ideological and political teachers.

This summer, Wang Feng will lead students to go deep into grassroots communities in Shandong, Henan, Chongqing and other places to conduct research on the theme of "Achievements, Practices and Experiences of the Communist Party of China in Strengthening the Construction of Grassroots Party Organizations since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China". Before leaving, he threw out a few questions to the students: Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the Communist Party of China has led the people to achieve world-renowned development achievements. So, how do grassroots party organizations implement the principles and policies of the Party Central Committee into grassroots social governance? In order to achieve these development goals, how has the Communist Party of China strengthened its own construction?

Wang Feng said that the best way for students to answer these questions is to insist on combining theory and practice, and bring the theories in books to real life.
