Precautions

  • Network-level authentication (NLA) can improve security and only need to be turned off if you're using an older version of Windows that doesn't support NLA.
  • When the Remote Desktop feature is enabled, the system starts a service called TermService and listens for incoming connections to TCP port 3389. An exception rule is also added to Windows Firewall that allows the port to receive authenticated data.
  • If you are using third-party security software, you may need to manually allow TCP port 3389.
  • By default, the current user and all user accounts of the Administrators group can remotely connect to the computer.
