Ophthalmologist reminds: Don't wear sunglasses of this color when driving in the summer

The dazzling sun shines after a rainy day, and at this time, whether we go out shopping or travel outdoors, we need sun protection. How do you choose a pair of sunglasses that are both comfortable and effective in protecting your eyes? Wang Jing, an ophthalmologist from the Municipal Eye Disease Prevention and Control Center, provided us with professional advice.

Ultraviolet rays are strong in summer, with 80% of ultraviolet rays being able to penetrate clouds and reach the ground. If exposed to high-intensity ultraviolet radiation for a long time, our eyelid skin may sags and age, and the cornea, lens and retina of the eye may also be damaged, increasing the risk of eye diseases. Therefore, whether it is a cloudy or sunny day, we should do a good job of sun protection for our eyes.

Many weather apps provide daily UV indices ranging from 1 to 11, with 1 being low intensity and 11 being high intensity. When the UV index reaches or exceeds 3, we should protect our eyes from the sun.

Qualified sunglasses are a beautiful weapon for blocking UV rays. So, how do you buy a good pair of sunglasses? Wang Jing suggested starting from the aspects of UV grade, transmittance, color, size, and weight.

01

Sunglasses UV rating

First of all, it is important to pay attention to the UV level of sunglasses, which is their ability to protect against UV rays. The higher the UV value, the stronger the protection. Ultraviolet rays are divided into three types: UVA, UVB and UVC, among which, UVC is absorbed by ozone in the atmosphere and basically does not reach the ground, so we mainly need to protect against UVA and UVB. A pair of qualified sunglasses should have a UV rating of more than 99%, and it is best to choose sunglasses marked with "100% UV protection".

02

Sunglasses Light transmittance

Secondly, there is the light transmittance, which is the shading rate of ultraviolet rays. Sunglasses on the market are divided into 5 grades according to different light transmittance, and the higher the grade, the higher the UV blocking rate. Generally speaking, category 0~1 is light-colored sunglasses, which are more suitable as fashion decoration; For daily UV protection, choose at least 2 types of sunglasses, suitable for going out for a short time on cloudy or sunny days; Category 3: Suitable for sunny days, especially for long-term outdoor activities; Class 4 is suitable for special purposes, such as skiing, desert, high altitude, etc.

03

Sunglasses color options

In addition, there is a difference in the color of the sunglasses. Gray and black lenses do not change the color of the object, and the chromatic aberration is small, making them suitable for various scenes. The brown and yellow lenses filter out a lot of blue light and are suitable for use in foggy or twilight. Green lenses reduce eye fatigue and are ideal for desk workers. The red lenses filter out green light in a targeted manner, making them ideal for backcountry riding. Blue lenses can effectively attenuate the light blue light reflected by seawater, which is suitable for seaside use, but it is not recommended to use it when driving, which may affect traffic light recognition. There's also a cool mercury lens that absorbs a lot of intense light, making it suitable for outdoor enthusiasts.

04

Sunglasses lens size

Finally, in terms of lens style, it is recommended to choose a larger frame type as much as possible, preferably to cover the eye area and protect the skin around the eyes from UV rays. At the same time, choose a lightweight frame with soft nose pads and wide temples for a more comfortable fit.

Of course, in addition to sunglasses, you can also choose a parasol and a wide-brimmed hat to protect your eyes. Not only do they protect the eyes and reduce the cumulative damage caused by UV rays, but they also make our lives more colorful.
