面里如一 (biǎo lǐ rú yī), the original meaning is that the appearance is the same as the heart, describing thoughts and words and deeds that are completely consistent. It is also called "the same as the inside and the outside". The idiom comes from Liu Xiang of the Western Han Dynasty "Yi Zhou Shu - Interpretation of the Law", "See China and foreign countries." "Western Jin Dynasty Kong Chao Note," the words are the same. ”
蘧博玉, Ji surname, 蘧氏, name 瑗, word Boyu. The Lan clan was a famous family in the Spring and Autumn Period, and Yu Boyu's father was also a doctor of the Wei Guo, and the mother of Zigong, a disciple of Confucius, was also from the Wei Guo clan.
He advocated governing the country by virtue, and believed that the rulers should lead by example, and use their own exemplary behavior to influence, educate, and influence the subjects, and his political proposition of "rule of Fuzhi" also created a precedent for Taoism to "rule by inaction".
Since the middle of Wei Xiangong, the noble character of Lan Boyu has become a well-known virtuous doctor in the world, he advocates that the monarch should lead by example, and he himself is so strict with himself.
According to the etiquette system at that time, when a courtier passed by the palace gate of the king, he had to get out of the car to salute, walk past and then board the car and leave. However, during the day, the ministers were able to enforce the rules of etiquette, and at night, when the palace gates were closed, most of the officials stopped doing so, and the monarch did not pursue it too much.
Yu Boyu didn't think so, he thought that since this etiquette was formulated, no matter what time it was, whether anyone saw it or not, as a courtier, it should be strictly observed, and he himself did it.
Every time he passed by the palace gate, whether it was day or night, whether the palace gate was open or closed, he got out of the car in strict accordance with the requirements, tidied up his clothes, and then respectfully saluted the palace gate, and then walked through before boarding the car and leaving.
One day, Lu Boyu passed through the palace gate at night and saluted the palace gate again in accordance with etiquette before leaving. At that time, Wei Linggong happened to have not rested, and was talking to his wife Nanzi in the palace, he heard a carriage coming outside the palace, and there was no sound when he arrived at the palace gate, and after a while, the sound of the carriage sounded again, and gradually went away.
When Wei Linggong heard that the car was far away, he asked Nanzi, "Guess who was passing by just now?" ”
Nanzi replied in a firm tone, "I don't have to guess, this person must be Lu Boyu." ”
Wei Linggong felt a little strange and didn't understand why Nanzi was so determined, so he asked, "How do you determine that it is Yu Boyu?" ”
Nanzi replied, "According to the rules of etiquette, courtiers should 'go down to the public gate and walk on the horse,' and these are all acts of respecting the monarch." As a gentleman, even if no one sees it, he will not give up his conduct. Lu Boyu is a wise man and gentleman, he is very respectful when he serves the king on weekdays, and he will definitely not lose his etiquette at night when no one sees him. ”
Wei Linggong was still a little unconvinced, so he sent someone to inquire, and learned that it was indeed Lu Boyu.
After Wei Linggong learned the results, he deliberately deceived Nanzi and said, "I sent someone to investigate, and last night someone did pass by the palace gate in a car and stopped outside the palace gate to salute, but this person is not Yu Boyu." ”
After hearing this, Nanzi was not disappointed, but immediately poured a duel of wine for Wei Linggong and congratulated him. Wei Linggong felt a little strange, so he asked, "You said last night that the person was Lu Boyu, I told you that it was not him, you guessed wrong and should be disappointed, why did you congratulate me instead?" ”
Nanzi replied with a smile, "Originally, I thought that there was only one sage in Weiguo, Yu Boyu, so I guessed that it was him, but now that I know that it is not, it means that we have a sage like him in Weiguo, and it also means that you have at least two virtuous ministers, isn't it worth congratulating?" ”
After hearing this, Wei Linggong had to admire Nanzi very much, took the wine and drank it all, and then told Nanzi the truth, and said, "The second virtuous minister has not been found for the time being, but you are my good wife!" ”
It is precisely because of such virtuous ministers as Yu Boyu that although the country has survived several wars and internal strife, and can only survive in the cracks of the big countries, it can still stand firmly in the Central Plains, and the people live and work in peace and contentment.
Confucius traveled around the world for 14 years, including 10 years in the country, and lived in his home twice. Because of this, Lan Boyu's political ideas, words and deeds, and sentiments also had a huge impact on the formation of Confucianism, and because of this, Lan Boyu was enshrined as the first heir in the east of the Confucian Temple.
