During the Anti-Japanese War, he and many comrades-in-arms of the Shandong Column of the Eighth Route Army and later the Luzhong Military Region were not afraid of difficulties, indomitable, and fought bravely, leaving many red battle stories.

76. The support of the masses is selfless
My father recalled: During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, every victory we won was inseparable from the support of the people.
In the battle of Wang Hongjiu, the masses of the people from all over the world sent food, vegetables and firewood to our troops, and our concealment department often put the famous products of the Lunan Mountains, pineapples, hawthorns, etc., which were sent by the masses. Leading comrades of the local government often visit us on the battlefield to understand the situation and resolve difficulties. Although their lives are very difficult, you do your best to support your own soldiers.
When the masses saw us wading mud and water in the trenches after the rain in late autumn and October, they asked some people to go out of the trenches to pick up muddy water, and although it could not fundamentally solve the problem, it expressed the enthusiasm of the masses of the people for the soldiers.
Among the thousands of cases in which the masses have supported us in building bunkers, there are two that I will never forget.
Once, when the troops were building fortifications, a young couple used a small cart, and the two of them pushed and pulled one by one, and sent brand-new cupboards and cabinets painted red to the troops for repairing the fortifications.
But they insisted that we stay, saying that this was a little bit of heart for beating Wang Hongjiu. We said that it would be enough to use a basket, and it would be a shame to use this new cabinet. They said, "What is this?" As long as we can eliminate Wang Hongjiu, we will be willing to do anything. We had to write down their villages and names.
Looking at the backs of the returning young couple, the company commander Comrade Zhang De'an said: "This is the dowry of the new daughter-in-law, and we can't use it." I picked up the company commander and said, "Yes, tomorrow we have to send someone to send them back." Comrade Lu Guiji, the squad leader, said: "What a good crowd these are. ”
Another touching example is that one morning at about 10 o'clock, an old man with gray sideburns carried a burden and brought four baskets for the troops. "Uncle, your basket is still new. Said a soldier who was sorting out sticks, baskets, and cabinets. Comrade Wei Yucai, the platoon commander, hurriedly went up to take over the burden of the old man, and the old man said while wiping the sweat on his face: "I heard that the comrades of the army wanted to use this thing to beat Wang Hongjiu, so I hurriedly made up these two pairs, sent them for use first, and then sent them back after I went back to make them up." Comrade Wei Yucai put down his burden and said: "Enough, don't send it anymore at such an old age." The old man replied, "What is this?" What do you need to beat Wang Hongjiu? Just say it. I thanked him too, and asked the correspondent to quickly bring a bowl of boiling water and hand it to the old man. After he finished drinking the water, he pointed to the enemy's stronghold and said, "You must quickly pick up these things (referring to the enemy) and remove this harm from our villagers." I said to the old man with relief: "Uncle, don't worry, we must eliminate Wang Hongjiu." "Avenge the common people. The old man nodded and said with a smile, "I have to go back, there are still more than twenty miles to go." The old man embarked on the way home, and we watched the old man leave with gratitude, and refused to leave the figure of the uncle for a long time. We must repay the expectations of the masses of the people with the practical action of completely eliminating Wang Hongjiu, and our cadres and fighters present thought silently.
77. Give full play to the political offensive of our army to disintegrate the enemy army
Father recalled: After a period of siege, after we took the enemy stronghold of Xiaowangzhuang, we concentrated our forces on attacking the enemy's main stronghold, Mengjia Village. The defender of the stronghold is Wang Hongjiu's cronies and Wang Hongjiu's main Du Qingjiu detachment. After the capture of Mengjia Village, Wang Hongjiu's old nest and Li's house were directly exposed to the spearhead of our army's attack. The strength of two regiments of our army captured Mengjia Village and completely annihilated the defending enemy. Du Qingyou, the commander of the enemy detachment, fled alone, and our army tightly surrounded Li's house, garden, and enemy stronghold.
Since we built a bunker that was higher than the enemy's bunker very close to the enemy's stronghold, the enemy's movement within the stronghold during the day was controlled. So they had to dig traffic trenches in the stronghold.
After more than two months of siege, the enemy's food and grass have been completely cut off, and it can be said that there is no food inside and no rescue troops outside. Although they have been preparing for a long time, it is finally unsustainable.
We often organize shouts against the enemy and carry out political offensives,
Conduct propaganda and education against the enemy to expose the enemy's sins and deceptions. Despite the fact that the enemy organized scolding teams and used gongs and drums to interfere with them, because of their dark reaction, many of the enemy's soldiers and junior officers broke through their tight control and escaped from their strongholds and surrendered to our troops.
In mid-November 1945, the enemy sent men to negotiate our surrender, and it is said that two radio stations were handed over. Although we cannot relax our vigilance, we always think that the enemy has no way to escape, and I am a little lax.
78. The enemy who resisted and fled was unfortunately wounded
My father recalled: In the battle of besieging Wang Hongjiubu, although some enemies secretly ran out and surrendered, some enemies continued to resist stubbornly.
One night at eight or nine o'clock, our cadres above the company and platoon level were holding a meeting at the company headquarters, when suddenly, the sentry came to report that there were many enemies in the enemy's stronghold Luchai. Company Commander Zhang Dean said: "If the enemy wants to run, report to the battalion headquarters as soon as possible." I said to the company commander: "Lao Zhang, I will take the 1st platoon to the southwest corner of the cemetery to block the enemy, and you quickly organize the troops to hold the trench." The company commander said to me, "I'll go." I said, "Don't fight, let's do it quickly." The only way for the enemy to break through is Zaozhuang, and it must be a vicious battle to intercept the enemy on the road that the enemy must pass, and the company commander and I are clear about this.
No sooner had we assembled our ranks than the entire battlefield erupted in the sound of heavy gunfire and grenades. We ran to the cemetery, deployed our team, the enemy pressed a large area of pounce, we started with our own grenades thrown out to hit the enemy, and then because the enemy threw too many grenades, and the drinking distance was close, we picked up the grenades thrown by the enemy and had not exploded to shoot back at the enemy. After more than ten minutes of confrontation between the enemy and us, they all rushed over, I was wounded by grenades in many places, my ears were buzzing, my cotton shirt (without cotton pants) was burning, and the messengers and soldiers extinguished the fire on my body, rescued me, and carried me to the company headquarters. At this time, the battalion commander, Comrade Feng Huade, rushed over, and he squatted down as if he was talking to me, but I couldn't hear it clearly. The hygienist bandaged my wounds, and the battalion commander also pointed and said, "The troops began to move south, and I realized that they had gone after the enemy who had broken through. I was put on a stretcher and carried north to the rear hospital.
I suffered burns on my face, two parts of my mandible, and the lower end of my left upper limb, my left hand, my left chest, and the upper end of my right lower limb. At first, I didn't feel any pain, but near midnight, after being rebandaged by the medical center of the 2nd Garrison Brigade of the Luzhong Military Region, my face and mouth were swollen, and the pain was unbearable. I lay on the stretcher, gritting my teeth and closing my eyes.
After dawn, the stretcher team carried me past the villages where I had worked and lived, Zhuyuan and other villages, and when I was resting, many people came to see me, and I recognized many acquaintances, but I didn't say a word, for fear of bad influences, and they naturally didn't recognize me, although they knew me well, because I was unrecognizable at that time. I lay on a stretcher, passed by Qingtuo Temple, and that day it was a market that took me to a hospital in Shaojiayu. That night, I had a fever, and my legs were so swollen that I couldn't wear pants, which was very uncomfortable. The doctor changed my dressing and used a large plate of bandages at a time. Sleepy, aching, and not sleeping well, very uncomfortable, unable to eat, and confused day and night.
