In the past, joint venture SUVs were the first choice for most families to buy cars. However, now the sales of joint venture SUVs are declining, and in April, many models that have sold more than 10,000 have shown a decline.

In the development of new energy vehicles in recent years, Tesla has been the target of benchmarking and imitation by many car companies. In April's sales list, the Tesla Model Y is still at the top of the list, with 26,356 selling more than 10,000 units more than the Honda CR-V behind it.

The top five on the list, with the exception of the Tesla Model Y, are all Japanese models. The Honda CR-V scored 15,385 units. The 3rd to 5th places are all Toyota's models, and GAC Toyota Fenglanda sold 14,243 units in April.

FAW Toyota's Rongfang and Corolla Ruifang both achieved sales of more than 10,000 in April. But the top five on the list did not even have the strong German models of previous years.

2. Volkswagen model sales declined collectively, and Volvo stood out outside Germany and Japan

Volkswagen was the first foreign brand to enter China after the reform and opening up. Sales of models such as the Tiguan, Tuyue, and Tanyue in China have also been relatively stable.

However, in 2024, some of Volkswagen's models that usually sell more than 10,000 units have shown a significant downward trend in sales.

The Volkswagen Tiguan L ranked sixth on the list in terms of sales in April, and the number one position among the entire German range of models seems to be good. But in terms of sales, this is the first time in the past 12 months that Tiguan L's sales have fallen below the 10,000 mark.

Volkswagen's Tanyue and Tuyue are outside the top 10 on the list. Although there are also German models such as the Audi Q5L and BMW X3 in the top 10 on the list, these two cars still win the market more by virtue of price reductions and BBA's remaining reputation. This fully shows that the current German brand premium effect is fading.

The ninth and tenth ranked Veranda and Qashqai also used to be models with monthly sales of more than 10,000, and now their sales have also fallen to about 8,000. In addition to Tesla and traditional German and Japanese models, the Volvo XC60 is the only model from other countries in the top 20.

American brands such as Ford and Buick are nowhere to be found in the top 20 on the list, which also highlights the lack of traditional American brands in today's Chinese market.

3. The mid-to-high-end is struggling to support, and the decline of traditional American SUVs is a foregone conclusion

The decline of U.S. SUVs is directly related to the poor sales of low-end and mid-range models. Compact SUVs such as the Ford Edge and Chevrolet Star Miro sold 1,020 and 30 units respectively in April. And these two cars should have been the main models that supported the sales of SUVs of one brand.

At present, the best sales of SUVs in the United States is Envision, with sales of 3,890 units not impressive. The Cadillac XT4 and Lincoln Navigator sold just over 2,000 units. Although it is also a high-end brand, the gap with BBA has become wider and wider.

The reason for this is that the poor fuel economy and relatively high failure rate of American models are the main reasons why it is difficult to gain a foothold in the low-end market. At the same time, although the high-end models of American SUVs have huge bodies and full aura, the sense of luxury in appearance design is generally not strong, and the utilization level of interior space is low. At the same time, the interior, although solid in materials, is somewhat traditional in design.

In other words, the current U.S. SUV is difficult to meet the preferences of consumers in the Chinese market. With the gradual maturity of China's auto market, Chinese consumers will be able to show a clearer and more unique market demand, rather than blindly admiring the characteristics and driving experience of foreign models.
