In the wake of the Daihatsu safety testing scandal, Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has been investigating safety testing fraud by automakers in their home market since 2014. Toyota, Honda, Mazda and Suzuki have all acknowledged "fraud" in safety testing of certain models and will therefore halt the production, shipment and sale of the affected vehicles currently on the market.

Among them, Toyota automakers admitted to submitting false data in pedestrian and occupant safety tests at the Corolla Fielder, Corolla Axio, and Yaris Cross. In addition, an internal investigation found tampering in crash tests of discontinued models such as the Crown, Isis, Sienta and Lexus RX. Toyota officials said that internal inspections have confirmed that the affected vehicles comply with all safety regulations.
Mazda disclosed that the engine control software for the brand's MX-5 RF Roadster and Mazda 2 models was rewritten during official production tests. Crash test vehicles for the discontinued Atenza/Mazda 6 and Axela were improperly modified, and production models were confirmed to meet safety standards.
