"It's time for scientific sun protection"

In this world of information explosion, sun protection, as an increasingly important issue, is no longer just a summer story.

In front of it, however, the intertwined history and lengthy scientific research seem to build an impenetrable wall. We tried to use all kinds of new technologies and recipes as a ladder, but we still felt that the wall was unattainable.

For a long time, as early as 4000 B.C., people have been fighting against the invisible arrows from the sun. It wasn't until the 19th century, when Germany's Friedrich Hammer created the first chemical sunscreen, that we really embarked on the journey of arming sun protection with science.

There's no doubt that sun protection needs science. For a long time, the damage caused by ultraviolet rays to the skin has always been one of the hot spots in medical research, because it is directly related to a series of health problems such as skin aging, pigmentation and even skin cancer. And with the deepening of research, people have gradually realized that sun protection is not simply a layer of cream that can be foolproof. Different skin types, different environments, and different ways of activity all put forward higher requirements for sun protection, which requires more accurate and scientific products to deal with it.

In fact, the sunscreen market has also become the "king of science". At the same time as the new products are stacked, new concepts and technologies such as anti-light damage, repair while sunburning, physico-chemical and bio-triple protection, AIR ultra-film sunscreen technology, "hollow breathing film" technology, and "stronger in case of heat" intelligent sunscreen technology make people overwhelmed.

On the other hand, for the inspection and efficacy evaluation of sunscreen cosmetics, sunscreen has entered the era of scientific evidence. This is because sunscreen cosmetics are special cosmetics in mainland China, which are subject to registration management, and need to pass a large number of tests and inspections before being listed, and go through a strict approval process before they can be listed.

Just last year, the China Institute for Food and Drug Control also issued a draft of the guiding principles for the detection technology of sunscreen cosmetics such as sun protection index, water resistance and long-wave ultraviolet protection index (PFA value), in order to further put forward scientific suggestions on the testing, result analysis and evaluation of key indicators of sunscreen cosmetics.

It can be said that from SPF value to PA index, from chemical sunscreen to inorganic sunscreen, every progress and breakthrough is like a trail opened up between the mountains and mountains, allowing consumers to have more understanding and choices about sunscreen.

Sunscreen needs to be popularized scientifically. The journey of scientific sun protection is full of hardships. This is because the efforts of brands and researchers cannot be directly translated into conscious actions of the public, and there is a process of knowledge transfer and transformation. The public's lack of awareness of sunscreen knowledge, especially in the face of increasingly updated technologies and theories, is difficult for ordinary people to quickly absorb and understand.

Even common terms such as SPF and PA value and basic sunscreen knowledge are still half-understood by many consumers. According to the 2024 Scientific Sun Protection Guide, about one-third of consumers believe that the sun protection ability of SPF50 and SPF30 is 20 times different. However, in fact, the SPF value is only an objective indicator of the sunscreen effect of the product, which is affected by a variety of factors such as erythema on the skin, and the sunscreen in the sunscreen will be degraded after being exposed to light. An increase in SPF from 30 to 50 is not simply a 20-fold increase in sun protection.

At the same time, many consumers do not have a clear understanding of the sunscreen scene corresponding to different SPF values, and do not know that sunscreen cosmetics are not the higher the sun protection factor, the better. Or, some consumers don't have a good habit of reapplying, pointing the finger at the product's poor sun protection.

The "common sense" in the eyes of these professionals has become "cold knowledge" in consumers, not to mention, it is difficult to explain the scientific principles to the public and translate them into the public's scientific cognition, even though we already have cutting-edge sunscreen technology and excellent sunscreen products.

Therefore, popular science is not only the dissemination of information, but also the enlightenment and popularization of knowledge. Through various forms of popular science activities, such as scientific sunscreen seminars, popular science articles, interactive experiences, etc., it can not only help the public establish a correct concept of sunscreen and realize the importance of reasonable sunscreen; More importantly, good science popularization can also arouse the public's interest in deeper exploration and learning of scientific sunscreen.

In addition, popular science can also help clarify the noise in the market, provide consumers with more transparent and credible knowledge of sun protection, and build a bridge of communication between technology and the public.

Just like the photo published in 2012 by the internationally renowned medical journal "New England Journal of Medicine" titled "Asymmetric Skin Aging", which simply and directly reveals the effects of long-term UV exposure on the skin. Such a vivid case, compared with a thousand-word scientific and technological explanation, can hit people's hearts more directly, and make people truly realize the great significance of scientific sunscreen to health.

History tells us that no matter how developed science and technology are, the power of popular science should never be underestimated. There has never been a great scientific discovery that changed the world in obscurity. On the contrary, the technologies that really touch people's hearts and change the way of life are the result of solid scientific research and conveyed to every ordinary person in an appropriate way. Therefore, we urgently need a popular science campaign about sun protection, a dialogue that can cross the gap between brands and consumers.

Based on this, in order to promote scientific sunscreen knowledge, improve consumers' awareness of the importance of scientific sunscreen, and establish a scientific view of sunscreen, on May 30, Qingyan and Qingyan Intelligence will hold the "2024 Scientific Sunscreen Seminar" in Hangzhou, and discuss sunscreen science and sunscreen science with a number of dermatology experts, university scholars, well-known KOLs and brands.

At the meeting, the "2024 Scientific Sunscreen Guide" and "Scientific Sunscreen 100 Questions and Answers" produced by Glauyan Information will be officially released, which have been supported by Chen Fengfeng, researcher of the Cosmetics Innovation Center of Jiangnan University, Professor Lai Wei of the Department of Dermatology of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Professor Liu Wei, consultant of dermatology of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Professor Yang Cheng of the Cosmetics Innovation Center of Jiangnan University, Wu Jianxin, professor/doctoral supervisor of China Pharmaceutical University, Professor Zhao Bingtian of the Cosmetics Innovation Center of Jiangnan University, and Professor Zhao Hua of Beijing Technology and Business University. and the mentorship of Sue Feng, founder of the Chinese and American Cosmetics Professional Association (CACPA) and professor at the College of Cosmetics and Perfumery in New York, USA (instructors in alphabetical order).

At that time, Qingyan will also join hands with professional evaluation bloggers and skin care bloggers to establish a scientific sunscreen KOL alliance, aiming to jointly promote the popularization of scientific sunscreen knowledge, so as to promote a more scientific and healthy development of the sunscreen era!
