Yangpu Riverside City Art Tour:

A review of public artworks in Yangpu, Shanghai

Bite! The 10-meter "light tower" landed on the Yangpu Riverside! Take you to find out

From the wharves along the river with chimneys and roaring chimneys, to the urban hotspot of openness and sharing, Yangpu Riverside carries Shanghai's century-old industrial civilization and is revitalizing its industrial heritage and intervening in urban renewal with art and technology. The factory has been transformed into a show, the warehouse has been transformed into an exhibition hall, public artworks and river scenery complement each other, and various cultural and artistic activities have come one after another...... Industrial relics have been transformed into cultural landmarks, and the "rust" color texture of the industrial era has been integrated into the "beautiful" life of the modern city. Yangpu Binjiang has always practiced the important concept of the people's city, written a new picture of urban life in an artistic and innovative way, and opened the butterfly change from "industrial rust belt" to "life show belt".

The "2019 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season" allows the public to enter the public space and experience public art, becoming a new art landmark and an eye-catching art event in Shanghai. 20 permanent works of public space along the 5.5-kilometer shoreline in the southern section of the Yangpu Riverside, from Esther Stocker from Italy, Oscar Oiwa from Brazil, Liu Jianhua, Xu Zhen and Song Dong from China, Richard Wilson from the UK, Felice Varini from Switzerland, Pascale Marthine Tayou from Cameroon, José de Guimarães from Portugal, and Yusuki from Japan Asai, Yoshiyuki Kawazoe, Keisuke Takahashi, Mé and other well-known artists from all over the world have injected a steady stream of artistic vitality into the city.

Spanning to May 2024, Yangpu Riverside continues to write brilliantly. Located along the river line of the green space of Minghua Sugar Factory, the 21st new commissioned public artwork - the sculpture "Light Tower" by artist Mr. Ding Yi is grandly presented, becoming a new landmark shining on the Yangpu Riverside, waiting for people to meet again in this vibrant city and start a beautiful urban art tour - City Walk, Art Walk.

City Walk is a new way of living, originating in the United Kingdom, and refers to a guided route that focuses on the city's history, art and culture. In China, the term has a broader meaning and mainly refers to walking around the city, where participants forget their route and feel the atmosphere of the city on their own.

Ding Yi's art is inseparable from the character "ten". Through this concise, intersecting symbol, his abstract paintings take us through an ever-expanding, ever-changing visual universe. In addition to painting, Ding Yi takes his iconic "Ten Manifestations" as the core, experimenting with artistic exploration in various media and fields, threading the needle and threading in the complex social structure, and weaving a unique narrative belonging to this era.

"Interweaving: Twenty Years of Ding Yi's Public Art Practice" comprehensively sorts out the artist's public art creation trajectory since the new century. From the four dimensions of construction, unbounded, participation, and publication, the exhibition intricately presents the time span, spatial extension, cultural integration, social participation, and continuity and unity of thought and action in Ding Yi's artistic career.

If Ding Yi's abstract paintings are an extreme condensation of perceptual experience, then his public art practice is straightforward and sensitive. In the wave of urban renewal, Ding Yi's works not only reshape the boundaries of the public's perception of form and order, finite and infinite, self and the outside world, but also inspire us to think about how to find a sense of belonging and emotional resonance in a rapidly changing world.

The power of art lies in its creative perspective to reflect society, lead change, and build a colorful, harmonious and inclusive cultural ecology. Our eyes are intertwined here, and we look forward to the potential influence and forward-looking role of public art in shaping the future of urban development.

Tomorrow, meet at Yangpu Riverside

We'll see you there!
