On 17 May, the situation on the international stage changed abruptly, and a strong wave of protests swept in from all directions, aiming at the powder keg of the Middle East - Israel. Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Canada, Australia, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Korea, and Sweden – the foreign ministers of these countries have joined forces in an unprecedented diplomatic move.
Al Jazeera's report citing German media was like a bombshell, causing an uproar in the international community. The 13 heavyweight foreign ministers signed a joint letter to Israeli Foreign Minister Katz, warning Israel in vehement terms that it must immediately stop its ground offensive against Rafah, a city in the southern Gaza Strip. They called on Israel to show due restraint and respect and to allow more aid and humanitarian access to the war-torn land.
This act of international solidarity has undoubtedly left Israel in a situation of isolation, and almost the entire international community is sending a clear message to it with the same voice: you must stop! This kind of pressure under public anger is undoubtedly unprecedented for Israel.
However, it is inexplicable that the United States, a member of the G7, has remained silent in this diplomatic storm. As one of the most influential countries in the world, the United States should have stepped up at this time and joined other countries in putting pressure on Israel. But the fact is that the United States chose to stay out of the situation and did not join the ranks of this joint warning.
Israel, which seems to have paid no heed to the condemnation from the international community, continues its attacks on the Rafah area and pushes ahead with its military operations in a desperate manner. This act undoubtedly adds fuel to the fire and further escalates tensions. The international community is generally concerned that, if Israel continues to go its course, it is likely to create a new humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and kill more innocent civilians in the shelling.
In the face of such a situation, the concern and anger of the international community are rising. What people want to see is a peaceful solution, not more bloodshed and sacrifice. Israel's actions, however, seem to be pushing that hope further afield.
