This ancient poem expresses the return of the spring color of the West Lake, and the spring water is as green as being dyed, showing the vitality and vitality of the West Lake. What people don't know is that this turquoise color is not dyed, but rather the algae that bloom in the water, causing the lake to take on a green color. This particular algae may seem inconspicuous in life, but in the eyes of scientists, it is a creature worth studying. Human progress is inseparable from these subtle scientific research. So, what kind of qualities should we have and how many kinds of knowledge should we have to do scientific research well?
On May 15th, the Scientist Forum of the High School Affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Shenzhen University of Science and Technology) welcomed a big name in the scientific community - the chair professor of the Department of Engineering Biology of the School of Synthetic Biology of Shenzhen University of Technology, who brought a unique lecture to all the senior high school students around "algae science". The lecture was presided over by Liu Changli, director of the scientific research department.
Professor Hu Qiang is a chair professor of the School of Synthetic Biology of Shenzhen University of Technology, director of the Department of Engineering Biology, a researcher of the Institute of Synthesis of the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, a national major talent project candidate, and the president of the International Society for Applied Algae. He used to be a tenured professor at Arizona State University and served as the co-director of the Arizona Algae Innovation Technology Center, the director and chief scientist of the Microalgae Biotechnology Center of the National Development and Investment Corporation, the director of the Beijing Key Laboratory of Microalgae Biomass, the director and distinguished researcher of the Algae Biotechnology and Bioenergy Research Center of the Institute of Hydrobiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the distinguished professor of Shenzhen University.
Professor Hu gave a lecture on the formation, status, characteristics, species, role and application of algae plants, as well as the importance of algae plants. At the scene, Professor Hu used a large number of pictures to show the students the algae plants in different scenes, such as algae blooms, green tides, red tides, and algae in the Yellow Sea taken by satellites, which aroused great interest of the students. At the same time, Professor Hu used vivid cases to illustrate the impact of algae plants on other biological populations, as well as the huge economic value of algae plants.
In addition to introducing the knowledge of algae plants, Professor Hu also introduced the qualities of becoming a researcher: curiosity, scientific method, systems thinking, observation, patience, leadership, innovation, responsibility, educational awareness, environmental awareness, communication skills and teamwork, as well as the key traits of being a successful entrepreneur: innovation, business insight, determination, courage, perseverance, judgment, self-confidence, leadership, flexibility, communication skills, sense of responsibility and willingness to learn. Professor Wu encouraged the students to set high aspirations while maintaining full curiosity and action. After listening to this, the students were very encouraged, and their eyes were full of anticipation for the future.
Finally, Professor Hu pointed out the way forward for the students: I hope that students will always remain curious, bravely pursue their dreams, not be afraid of failure, and persevere! In the future, no matter where you are or what role you play, I hope that you will be able to give back what you have learned to society and contribute to the sustainable development of mankind.
During the Q&A session, Professor Hu patiently answered the students' questions. During the exchange, the students said that they had benefited a lot.
After the lecture, Director Liu made a concluding speech. She hoped that after listening to the lecture, the students would not only learn knowledge, but also learn the spirit of scientific exploration, the awareness of studying problems, and the perseverance of the goal.
